All the successful backtalk responses incorporate some piece from the previous line of dialogue, so if you just listen to what the person says you can usually figure out how to turn it against them. Your progress is indicated by those little dots leading to the center bubble. If Chloe wins her part of the argument, a dot on the left side gets shaded in. If the other person wins, their dots on the right get shaded in. Whoever gets to the middle bubble first wins. I don't think I lost a single part of any backtalk challenge just by listening to what the person said and determining how to own them.

Okay I have a really stupid question ahead of Episode 2:

How exactly does backtalk work? Is it just choosing the correct responses? What about the timer? Do you get chances to make a mistake?

I think I did all of them, and I won a few, but I'm not exactly sure what's involved in getting them right or wrong.

You're supposed to pick a response that is in some way connected to keywords in what the other person said. Like, if the bouncer makes a crack about it being past your bedtime, respond asking about his bedtime. If he says it's up to his boss who gets in, you can bitch about how bosses suck or you can tell him to not be a lapdog for his boss.

The problem I have with the challenges is that (at least in regard to the first episode) they don't really matter, even if you lose the game still lets you accomplish your objective some other way regardless. This might change as we get further in though.

Yeah, I thought that at first too. It would have been a hell of a way to end things but I'm kind of glad they didn't go that route. That said, even if this isn't leading up to Rachel's disappearance I still don't really expect that happy an ending out of this game when all is said and done (there's probably going to be at least two possible endings like there were in the first game but I have no idea what the final choice leading up to it could be).

Or perhaps instead of a choice the final encounter will be a Backtalk challenge against either Rachel, the woman, or the raven in the guise of William (or maybe even Chloe herself) and whether you succeed or fail determines the final ending.

Canemacar posted:

Yes, because the universe itself hates Chloe. Glad to see that wasn't the case though. Definitely the lowest point we've ever seen her at. It would have been too cruel to leave it there.

When she crumpled up on the ground and the scene faded to black, I was convinced that the credits were about to roll. I wouldn't have put it past the writer, given all the crap we know this girl is going to go through down the line. Not at all.

I can't wait to see where this is all going. Judging by the camera lingering on the mystery woman's smirk and Chloe's reaction to hearing the name Damon Merrick, I figure they've got to be important to the story.

I wonder how insanely cruel it would be to play through the original after this season is over and let Chloe kill Frank, too.

Larryb

It would be interesting to go back to the original after all is said and done and see how much BtS changes the experience (it's already helped me understand and appreciate the Sacrifice Chloe ending a bit more at the very least).

Plus, while it's possible the series might continue on past DontNod's planned sequel, it's looking likely we won't be seeing any of Arcadia Bay's residents again after this wraps up so it's best to enjoy it while we can (unless they get Deck Nine to do more side games like this in the future that is). While I am going to miss these characters I'm also interested in seeing what the future holds for this series.

I suppose there are a few more stories they could possibly tell with the current cast if they wanted though. Perhaps a game starring Rachel following the events leading up to her death or what Max was up to during those 5 years in Seattle?

Or less likely, a direct continuation following Sacrifice the Bay about Max and Chloe dealing with the aftermath of the storm (not sure how you'd do a sequel following the other ending without messing up its purpose somehow).

Granted, the Rachel idea is mostly because I've been enjoying Kylie Brown's performance in this game and wouldn't mind seeing more from her (it also could be a somewhat interesting idea in practice). Come to think of it, aside from Ashly Burch (who was already a somewhat accomplished writer/voice actress beforehand), Daniel Bonjour (who had a role on The Walking Dead), and Hannah Telle's music career have any of the other actors from LiS done anything noteworthy (or anything at all for that matter) since then?

Have you played All Wounds? Like Love Is Strange, it's a fan-made visual novel and tells of how Max and Chloe struggle to come to terms with survivor's guilt and their feelings for each other, having chosen to sacrifice the bay. It's a work in progress but you might enjoy what there is of it.

No but I have read the fanfic it was based on which is also in progress, it's actually pretty good for the most part (as it gets further in the author starts making a lot of references to Undertale and Chrono Trigger for some reason, still worth a read though). When it's finished I'll definitely give the visual novel version a try though.

Life Is Strange hit its fanbase like a big ol' supernatural tornado, huh? So many fanworks have arisen from the game at a rate that hasn't let up to this day!

About the spiteful counterpart of herself Max confronts during the nightmare in Episode Five. According to the Life Is Strange wiki, this doppelganger is refered to by the game's coding as Max Ghost. My personal theory was always that she was the Max from another timeline, specifically the timeline in which Chloe becomes crippled and Max joins the Vortex Club. But maybe she's the vengeful spirit of a Max who perished when the Max we play goofed up and had to rewind her way out of trouble? Perhaps she's bitter about her own fate which is why she preys upon the surviving Max's fears to try and keep her from escaping the nightmare?

I always perceived Max's nightmare not as a dream, but as literal fractured realities that her timejumps helped to create. So like in one of infinite multiverses there really is a two whales diner spinning out into space with a bunch of frozen townspeople inside, and that universe's Max is trapped there. Evil Max says this herself with, "Or I'm one of the many Maxes you left behind." I took that to mean that when Max alters time in any way, those alternate realities continue in some tangent universe, and many of them become increasingly glitched and chaotic.

I kinda suspect that was the devs intention, but it was changed at some point in development. The nonstop picture jumping in Episode 5 was clearly causing some kind of breakdown in reality until it just kind of stopped. Same with the nosebleeds. As things escalated and Max used her power in more extreme ways, the nosebleeds got worse and worse until it just stopped happening. It feels like they ran out of time and had to quickly wrap everything up.

I think it's mostly a pacing issue. The nightmare sequence goes on for way too long, and is bookended with Max and Chloe at the lighthouse, which kind of interrupts the dramatic weight of that scene. I think it would have been more cohesive if all the stealth sequences were cut and we went directly from Warren photojump -> nightmare -> lighthouse.

Canemacar
Mar 8, 2008

I'll second that. The stealth section really dragged and wasn't fun. I also think the Museum of Chloe part should have been abbreviated more. They could have cut most of it out, leaving just the highlights and it would have had the same effect without putting a bullet in the pacing.

Larryb
Oct 5, 2010

Yeah, the nightmare could have been trimmed down a bit. The stealth section was annoying and pointless as the only penalty for getting caught was a forced Rewind that doesn't even cost you any progress, plus a lot of the best dialogue during it wound up getting cut from the game.

The section in the Dark Room with Chloe macking on almost everyone while Max watches came off to me as more comical than was probably intended and the Max & Chloe Museum at the end could have been a lot shorter while still having the same impact.

It's also kind of weird the only other person we see during the hallway scenes is Kate at the very beginning, they could have probably done a lot more with that. There could have been a few more transitions as well, if you're going to throw a random Victoria section in there why not go all the way? Have Max turn into Kate, Nathan or even Chloe for a section.

It still was one of the few parts that worked for me regardless though (others being the classroom at the very beginning and the diner at the end where the conversation with Nightmare Max took place).

Canemacar

I know what you mean about the Chloe Macking on Everyone bit being almost funny. I get what they we're going for in having Max's jealousy and insecurity about her relationship with Chloe thrown in her face, but the execution wasn't all there.

On the other hand, the bit in the classroom where the birds splat against the window until it's opaque with blood was something straight out of Silent Hill and really freaky.

Oh I understand what they were trying to go for there, it's just that it came off more funny than poignant to me. The very end of it where Chloe was alone and speaking with Max directly worked a little better though but overall that whole scene kind of falls flat to me (there was apparently some cut dialogue where the real Chloe would try to speak to you during that section, which might have helped the tone a bit if they left that in).

Also, what exactly was the significance of Max suddenly turning into Victoria during the hallway section supposed to be?

Having Chloe try and reach Max through her fugue state would have been really cool and would set up her arrival in the diner scene a bit better when she finally gets through to Max.

Today is looking like a real nothing day at work so I hope I can cut out early for what's really important, the fictional lives of melodramatic art school teenagers. Jealous of all you PS4 owners who got the midnight release.

Larryb
Oct 5, 2010

So apart from being expelled, David moving in and a run-in with Damon things seemed to work out a lot more in Chloe's favor this time. Something horrible is going to happen in the next episode isn't it? Also, am I the only one who thinks Samuel's new voice sounds really off?

The play did not go quite like I was expecting but while it was obviously affirming their relationship from a metaphorical standpoint you could view the ad-libbed section as further proof to the Rachel's Revenge theory.

That is, whether consciously or not, Rachel was (in a sense) the mastermind behind the storm and Chloe was the instrument of her revenge before finally being granted her freedom at the end of the first game thanks to Max. Technically all 3 girls share some the blame (as well as Nathan and Jefferson by association) though.

The scene with Victoria if you switch the cups was kind of funny though and baby Pompidou was adorable.

I'm still not sure what to make of Sera though, Frank says she's a bit of a troublemaker and she's clearly following Rachel. Question is, does she have some kind of ulterior motive or is she merely trying to reconnect with her estranged daughter?

Also a slight discrepancy regarding the woman, the game calls her Sera but apparently the texture files for her model in the previous episode refer to her as "Ruth". My guess is the developers either changed their minds or the former is an alias of some kind.

While not quite on the level of the first game it's looking like some big things are still going down in the finale. I'm curious to see how this all ultimately ends.

Played through it this evening. Really good episode, lots of choices and it seems like I went against the grain a fair few times.

Most notable was saving Drew over Mikey. I went with staying with Mikey first, but after a few minutes you hear his knee clearly being broken. Dude may be a jackass but his best chance of helping out his brother and dad is that football scholarship. Mikey breaking his arm isn't going to ruin their lives. Also $1000 isn't going to go very far... It was tough though.

I'm interested to see what the end point of this is. I can't quite remember the timeline, is this about the same time frame for Rachel to disappear? Seems like an obvious cutoff...

So I just finished episode 2 and boy howdy was that a trip. Loved the callbacks to the first season ( Chloe being compared to a "force of nature" and the "this is will have consequences" graffiti being framed in the upper corner of the screen near the fire alarm stuck out) though I can't say I'm too thrilled about new Samuel?

I think the weirdness stems from the writers trying something new with his character. This time around, he's more of a weird old self-help hippy instead of a magical vaguely autistic guy which is... I guess a step up? His dialogue is a lot goofier and on-the-nose though. "Rachel is a dragon made of diamonds" sounds like a parody of his old "Rachel is a prism" speech.

Also, Rachel is really starting to alarm me and I love it. The way she drugged Victoria to steal her role back kinda threw me and gave Vic a more interesting reason to hate Rachel than jealousy if that's the kind of person she is. I also love the way her speech in the play is a declaration of love in the context of a master/servant relationship. BUT YOU LOVE BEING MY PAWN CHLOE. JUST A LITTLE LONGER I PROMISE.

Woah, this seems to have played out very different in my playthrough. I had Victoria trying to drug Rachel to claim the lead role, then I decided to switch the cups to drug Victory instead.

The play speech was great though. Equal parts adorable and creepy.
