So how's Remember Me, also by Dontnod? I'm not expecting LiS level story or execution, and I know it's not the same kind of game, but did any of the LiS fans itt find it enjoyable? It's only $6 on Steam right now, so I threw it on my wishlist but I thought I'd ask in case it's abysmal.

The dystopian scifi atmosphere and concept of remixing memories are very cool, and you can see the spark of the same creative forces that influenced Life is Strange. It's kind of thwarted by a half-baked arkham style combat system that while neat in design feels rigid in execution, and the story somehow manages to drag despite only being a 10-12 hour game. I liked it overall but I also got it in a humble bundle with like 5 other games for $7.

It's a one of those linear cinematic platformer types with some combat. The combat has an interesting mechanic where you have a list of preset combos whose moves you can choose to either do more damage, heal you, or reduce the cool down on your abilities. The idea is cool but there are only a handful of combos and you have to unlock the combos and the moves and it's never too demanding so it just feels eh. Story is garbage, but also kind of entertaining garbage and includes characters with names like "Edge" and "Bad Request". The ending's kinda dumb too. Remember Me charmed the poo poo out of me and was one of the first games I became interested enough in to actually think about it's themes and how (badly) they were executed. The combat was fun to play around with and for 6 bux you could do a hell of a lot worse. The memory remix segments are neat (too bad there are only like 5 in the whole game) and the art direction is great. It got me interested in DONTNOD and when I found out about Life is Strange I was in from the beginning. but like it's still pretty meh.

I've been thinking about this game a lot in the past few days. Deck9 really did a solid job with this prequel for the most part, especially since it's made me like the whole series more than I did. I'll really miss these characters when we move on in the next game.

My number one takeaway from this series is that political lesbianism is a valuable survival tool against predation by powerful men.

As far as DontNod goes, does Vampyr look like it's going to be any good or have we not really gotten much information on that yet either? I'll be surprised if we don't get our first trailer for LiS 2 (or maybe they should call it Life is Strange 3 at this point) at E3. They've got some pretty big shoes to fill but they might still be able to pull it off. I can almost guarantee there will still be a few confused fans asking "Where's Max/Chloe/etc?". I've already seen some people online referring to BtS as Life is Strange 2 (though technically I suppose they're not completely wrong on that). I've been watching an LP of Before the Storm and something occurred to me during the D&D session. I think it'd be pretty fun if the next game revolved around a group of friends who play D&D together, each episode having a real life portion and a game portion. I think some neat things could be done with weaving the themes and choices from the real world portion into how the D&D sessions play out each time. I just really liked how the D&D sessions were done in Before the Storm and I'd like to see a game like this that plays with that more.

The coolest thing about the D&D wasn’t even the session itself. It was during the Drew/Damon scene with the Minotaur figure towering over the other figure lying on the ground while Damon was beating up Drew. That framing was

Yeah, that entire session was basically a blatant sendup of the first game's ending. The one in the first episode kind of referenced LiS as well but it was a lot more subtle about it. That said, a game based around the concept that switches between the fantasy world of the game and the real life struggles of the players while showing how they mirror one another could be an interesting idea (hell, you could even bring back Steph if you wanted to, she was cool). Speaking of which I'm really glad they didn't decide to villainize or kill off her or the North family somehow as they were some of the few BtS-exclusive characters I actually liked. It's always nice to be reminded that while Arcadia Bay is a cesspool and the dregs of society seem to have all the power (Sean Prescott, James Amber, Mark Jefferson, etc), they still only make up a small portion of the overall population. The rest are pretty ok (it at the very least, have their good points). Larryb fucked around with this message at 17:46 on Dec 24, 2017 |

That reminds me...was it ever explained why Sean Prescott insisted on paying Mikey's medical bills? The only motive I can think of is that he wanted to look like a benevolent soul in the eyes of the citizens. But then he's never shown much care for how Arcadia Bay regards him. And besides, the boy is Drew's brother and Drew recently bullied Nathan. So yeah, why would Sean go out of his way like that for the North family?

I think the Prescotts take a lot of pride in Blackwell, and despite their faults, taking care of the students there is one of their priorities.

Just finished the thing. Was amazing. The ending shot of the cell phone was bone chilling. I want to reiterate that I wish the developers would make it so that if you go into the original Life is Strange game accusing the teacher of that girl's suicide in the 2nd episode that there will be a secret bonus scene where the teacher just looks straight at the camera (the player) with a knowing grin or whatever for a moment, scoff, and then continue as normal. Was a huge missed opportunity imho. I also think it was a missed opportunity that the bad guy from the first game didn't show up here in a minor, benign role or whatever.

If you go down the hall past Rachel's room you can hear Sean Prescott refusing let Nathan be taken under psychiatric care. Weird though, since at my college's counseling department that had white noise generators for every room, or they at least closed the door.

And besides, the boy is Drew's brother and Drew recently bullied Nathan. So yeah, why would Sean go out of his way like that for the North family? Especially considering he's also the reason Drew and Mikey's dad is out of work (and probably also why they're homeless as well). Related to that, I've noticed a lot of times in this series the guilty are actually rewarded (for a time anyway). In BTS Victoria is not only not reprimanded for cheating but (if Chloe doesn't step in and take the blame) instead is let off the hook thanks to Nathan and given Rachel's role in the play, plus in the same meeting Chloe is blamed for something Drew did and she actively tried to stop. Also, if you hide the truth in the end James gets away with lying to his daughter for years as well as colluding with a drug lord and almost getting his ex-wife murdered just to preserve his image. Not to mention the fact that, until the Sacrifice Chloe ending at least, the Prescotts are basically untouchable (hell, it's possible for Max to actually get suspended for ratting on Nathan, and this is after she's already won the respect of the rest of the school by saving Kate) and even with said ending there's no guarantee that Sean didn't come out relatively unscathed. In fact, if it hadn't been for Max and Chloe's investigation Jefferson probably would have gotten away with everything as well. The primary antagonists of this series all seem to be men for some reason (possibly due to the theme of toxic masculinity that's present in both Life is Strange and Before the Storm). The closest thing on the other side we've seen so far is probably Victoria but she has her own circumstances to deal with (IE: insecurity and intense pressure from her family to be perfect at everything). Even Sera didn't end up being nearly as bad as some of us originally made her out to be (she's not entirely blameless either mind you but this is another case where the punishment far outweighs the actual crime). Love Stole the Day posted:Just finished the thing. Was amazing. The ending shot of the cell phone was bone chilling. Before the Storm and Life is Strange were not made by the same developer so I doubt that first point is going to happen. Also, Before the Storm takes place about 3 years before the original which is before Jefferson came to Blackwell (and I think the first game implies that he only started there recently). So I had a weird thought about the original as I was playing through BtS- in the original LiS I found Chloe's story about Nathan drugging her, then her waking up partway through and kicking his rear end to be kind of weird, and my tentative assumption was that he'd assaulted her and she misrepresented what happened for her own peace of mind. That having been said, this was supposed to have happened before Rachel disappeared, right? What if she told the truth, and the reason she woke up early and escaped was because his first screwup was making the dose too light, and Rachel was his trying to prevent the same thing from happening again?

I thought that it happened after Rachel disappeared. The reason Chloe and Nathan were hanging out in the same place was she needed cash to payback the money Frank loaned her- money that she would've run away with had Rachel been alive. Nathan hosed up and killed Rachel and was really eager to make it up to Mr. Jefferson. Nathan tried to get back in his good graces by drugging Chloe and taking pictures of her Dark Room style as a Please Love Me Father Figure present/proof he could do things on his own. He went too light with the dose while trying to be careful and Chloe was able to escape and then tried extorting him. Thus leading to their "bidness" meeting in the bathroom.

Yeah, I don't remember if Chloe tells Max the exact time frame but it's implied that it happened shortly (as in, maybe a week or two at most) before LiS started so Rachel was already missing by then. I am sort of curious now what drove Rachel to getting involved with Frank (or Jefferson for that matter) in the first place though seeing as Chloe didn't seem to be aware anything had really changed and I think on some level Rachel's feelings for her were genuine. Speaking of which, I do like how BtS sort of recontextualizes the scene where Chloe finds out though as if she lied to Rachel back in the hospital then her reaction might have just been her projecting a little seeing as technically she betrayed Rachel's trust first and has been living with the guilt for the past 3 years. Though if she told the truth back then that sort of makes things worse as it means that Chloe was completely upfront with Rachel through their entire relationship (even risking her life trying to help Sera) and Rachel responded to that by inadvertently stabbing her in the back. I don't think this is consistent with the bulk of BtS, but you know how in LiS their closeness was partially depicted as being a result of their meeting when Chloe was emotionally vulnerable after her dad hugged a truck and Max disappeared from her life? Before playing BtS my theory was that Chloe simply thought the friendship was much bigger and deeper than it really was; I don't think it ever explicitly defined the nature of their relationship, but I'd been interpreting it as unrequited romantic feelings on Chloe's part. BtS chapters 2 & 3 made Rachel out to be genuinely invested in the relationship, and I think that's the interpretation that's easiest to support, but in the first chapter of BtS, before all the stuff with DA Dad, I thought they were setting Rachel up to be a manipulative sociopath, which is an angle I think would've been genuinely interesting to see play out. (On the other hand Chloe is one of my very favorite video game assholes, and it would make me sad to see her taken advantage of more than she already was.) Also, for the record, while it's totally consistent with how kids act, the way that Max just literally stopped returning Chloe's calls and emails after moving away really miffs me; teenager Chloe deserved a better best friend/co-pirate.

Fair, and we've also seen that Rachel kind of has the mind of a child in some ways and might not be emotionally mature enough to handle a relationship like that nor understand how her actions could hurt others (which is kind of ironic considering what her dad did, though between that and her mom it's pretty clear how Rachel turned out the way she did). I think it's pretty clear that she did actually like Chloe though, just probably not in the way that Chloe wanted/needed her to. So, just as her dad warned her about in her dreams, Chloe didn't see/actively ignored the warning signs, got herself in way too deep and ended up suffering for it in the end. Though you could say that hiding the truth was Rachel's way of protecting Chloe, much like Chloe did herself if she chose to not tell Rachel about James and Sera years earlier. I don't think it's ever really explained why Max fell out of contact with Chloe though my guess is that it was a combination of fear and just needing time to adjust to her new situation (as we've seen, Max wasn't exactly the most proactive person before she got her powers after all). Maybe the bonus episode will shed a bit of light on that. Larryb fucked around with this message at 13:14 on Dec 25, 2017 |

Plus, it's pretty obvious that Chloe does not handle loss very well (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if during the first game deep down she was scared of potentially losing Max again) which is why when someone like Rachel came along she latched onto her for dear life while ignoring her faults. While two broken people coming together doesn't always make a whole they did end up help make each others lives a little better than they would have been if they never met (for better or worse, Rachel did change Chloe's life and make her a stronger person, much like how Chloe would later do for Max in LiS). Also, considering how she reacted when Rachel left her at the junkyard during their first outing it's possible that her telling Chloe about Frank at the time would have just made things even worse. Of course, Rachel's fate could have been sealed from the beginning since in the timeline where William lived she and Chloe never met (and as a result, Rachel probably never found out about Sera and continued living in an illusion) but she still wound up falling prey to Jefferson regardless (or in the best case scenario, just wound up running away on her own).
