I really enjoyed this episode. It was short and sweet with the trademark Life Is Strange dropkick to the heart at the end. Chloe is one of the best developed, realistic and likable characters I've ever seen in a game. I'm undecided on Max, sometimes I get where she's coming from and sometimes she's frustrating with how much she holds back when she shouldn't. Time-travel manipulation of people aside, playing through all of these games made me reverse my initial views on both Max and Chloe almost completely. Seeing Max and Chloe dig up the treasure was hard to watch because it instantly reminded me of something else like that they do together. Another kick in the balls is that if you choose to save Arcadia Bay in season 1, the tape is pretty much the last time Max speaks to Chloe aside from the weak "sorry, busy!" texts every few months. Ready for season 2, new setting, new characters, and a hosed up murder mystery and teenage melodrama, please.

I'd have to see the original scene again to be sure but it felt framed the same and I think the two characters are even in the same spots Stare-Out posted:but one moment that really struck me was when Chloe and Rachel ride the rails and listen to music together, there's a quick shot of both of their legs dangling over the side of the train car, swinging along with the music and that's when I suddenly remembered, "Oh yeah, they'll both get murdered within the next three years." It ends up feeling really sad when Rachel says "one day I'm gonna climb Everest". Cause like, plenty of teenagers say that kind of thing and obviously most of them don't end up doing it, but it's an extra like... twist of the knife knowing that Rachel doesn't even get an opportunity in the future because of her murder Macaluso fucked around with this message at 17:51 on Mar 6, 2018 |

Someone earlier suggested a Machete order of sorts where you play the BTS episodes right after playing the LIS episodes of the corresponding number, and offhand that idea sounds like it would play out really well. I think Farewell would actually be a great extended prologue to doing that because it gives a lot more context to Max and Chloe's relationship, which should make trivial-seeming stuff like the phone call decision feel much more weighty. Gameplaywise though I guess that would make it a tougher sell since the player is doing basically nothing for an hour, but narratively I think this really works.

Did anyone else think it was a little weird when Chloe & Rachel are walking in the junkyard and Rachel suddenly says "wow, I wouldn't be caught DEAD in here!" Trying to parse out the deeper significance of this line.

Though come to think of it, could BtS work as someone's first introduction to the series or is it too tied to its predecessor to be able to stand on its own (the only real spoilery bit I can think of is the very last scene)? Though taken as a whole there's some good irony that Arcadia Bay's savior winds up being the girl who probably has the most reason to see it burned to the shore. Still kind of sucks for the Chloe that actually gets sacrificed though, she's deep in debt, Rachel is missing and as far as she knows the last real communication she had with Max was a lie. Not to mention her last moments are being shot in a bathroom by a psycho (one who she once tried to help no less).

I think BTS could work well as an intro. Whatever's missing gets filled out by Chloe's journal entries. I'm not sure if you can fit Farewell in there though.

After Farewell, one could argue that sacrificing Chloe is kindness so that the universe can't poo poo on her any more.

Farewell fits fine right at the beginning actually, it sets up Chloe's situation and flows pretty nicely into BtS proper. Though to a first time player I'm not sure doing it first would have quite the same impact. As an aside, I love the ending theme to this episode and think Black Flies is basically to this game what Spanish Sahara was to the original (a pity that Numbers from the initial trailer never got used in the game proper, that would have worked well too). In It For The Tank posted:After Farewell, one could argue that sacrificing Chloe is kindness so that the universe can't poo poo on her any more. Sacrifice Chloe is a fitting end to her character arc honestly and why I think the "greater beauty" William spoke of was actually referring to Chloe herself. She saves everyone, stops what she, Max and Rachel (among others) all helped start, and manages to give one last middle finger to the universe as her death creates a domino effect leading to the downfall of Jefferson and the Prescott family. Of course, nobody but Max is ever going to know the truth and it's not fair that she once again has to take the fall for someone else's mistakes but it still seems like a very Chloe way to go out. I never really believed that Nathan was the one who ended up killing Rachel. In the context of that scene you're hearing it from Jefferson, directly after he just made up a story about Nathan shooting Chloe, and he's not exactly the most reliable of narrators to say the least. I think Nathan was likely tweaked out of his mind and has a hazy account of what happened that night as an accomplice, but it was ultimately Jefferson who hosed up and OD'ed her.

There's also that one photo in the Dark Room of Nathan and Rachel passed out together and the fact that earlier when Max shows up at the diner wearing Rachel's clothes he's actually overjoyed for a brief second before realizing who it is. So yeah, there's no proof that Nathan was the one who actually killed Rachel, he's just the one who buried her. The statement still technically works though since Jefferson would later kill Chloe as well. Larryb fucked around with this message at 21:05 on Mar 6, 2018 |

On the other hand, a lot of evidence points to it being Nathan's job to drug the girls. He is the one buying the drugs from Frank and we know he definitely drugged Kate and Chloe. Nathan being the one to overdose Rachel might also explain why Chloe was able to escape: still traumatized from killing Rachel, he used a smaller dose when he drugged Chloe for fear of killing her too, which gave her the opportunity to recover her bearings and fight him off.

I think Nathan did it. It makes sense that if that was his first time he would have hosed up the dosage and gave her too much my accident. He was being manipulated by Jefferson so he is ultimately responsible but I have no problem believing that she died to Nathan’s fuckup.

It might just a be a bug in the PC version, the episode seems to run fine on PS4 aside from some occasional framerate issues. Off the subject, while I'm fine with moving on to a new cast and setting in Season 2 I do hope they at least keep using Hawt Dawg Man as he seems to be becoming something of a mascot for this series. I've said this before but it might be cool if they actually let us play the video game Max mentioned in LiS as sort of an optional mini-game ala Demontower in Night in the Woods. I think that it will be set in the same universe for sure. We will see hawt dog man, we will get some references. We could even get some allusions to some characters. I wouldn't be surprised if we get like a reference to Max's Photography career or something, assuming that the game is set in 2018 or something. Like we would get like a picture of an photography installation by max that says like "inspired by my friend Chloe Price" with no indication if Chloe is alive or dead.

Some allusions here and there would be nice, maybe a character cameo later on if they really want to but at this point I'd rather that LiS 2 stand on its own as much as possible (though I am curious if they're going to acknowledge BtS at all). Of course, there's no guarantee it'll be in the same state, country or even time period as the original. Hell, for all we know we might not be playing as a teenager or even a girl this time around (or be doing anything involving time travel for that matter). They pretty much have free reign to do whatever they want at this point, the only real requirements are that it be choice-based, episodic, heart wrenching yet at the same time goofy as gently caress, and of course be hella gay. I can only hope that the new cast will wind up being just as good as the Arcadia Bay crew and as I've said, this is probably the game that's going to make or break Life is Strange as a potential new franchise. So has anyone gotten their hands on the Limited Edition yet? If so, is there anything added on to it that's not in the digital version? For example, I believe the physical version of the original game added a collectors mode where you could go back to any scene to get anything you missed (which is present by default in BtS), the ability to play the episodes out of order with randomized choices and a downloadable commentary track from the directors. Off the subject, but William's original VA apparently also reprises his role in Farewell. The guy's actually got a bigger resume than I originally thought. Of course. Being Chloe Price is apparently a serious crime in this universe, she's doomed in any timeline. Hell, even before this whole mess got started we learn in BtS that her cat got run over by a car not long after they got it.
