Is there any way to force my Chromebook to sync with Google drive? I've got some files there that aren't showing up on my local device and I'm not sure how to force it to go back and check

Ah, I've had that same issue on occasion. I'm not aware of a way to specifically force a sync, but I've found that visiting the changed directory both via the file explorer and from drive.google.com can get it to wake up and transfer the changed files.

Friend of mine has an HP Stream (13?) from years ago. He got in touch the other week when he started getting error messages for installing VLC, turns out the poor 32GB onboard storage had about 8 bits left on a Windows 10 installation - presumably a release that's now end of life, or it certainly can't update itself even if it isn't.

I got him to uninstall some stuff and run the Windows cleanup utility but these are obviously only temporary mitigations. Longer term he needs either a Linux distro or ChromeOS Flex. He wants to store music and some video locally on the onboard storage.

ChromeOS is the obvious choice, but I don't know what apps/extensions or whatever it uses to play local media or if that works as it does on Windows. Can anyone comment?

You can use VLC https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-chromeos.html

The interface is bonkers but it works. Some media types work natively, too.

I use PlexAmp for my Plex media, and the built-in thing for stuff I've downloaded to the MicroSD card. But you can run a whole bunch of Android apps on a Chromebook, so you've got pantloads to choose from.

We just did a big chromebook shuffle.

I'm back on the OG Pixelbook. Cruft Jr now has a Lenovo Duet, and Ms Cruft takes the HP X2.

Jr tried Windows for a full year in college and is sick of it. I know Google will eventually crap this OS up, but for the time being, it sure is nice to have a computer that you can turn on and start doing work, without having to fight the OS to install updates or make the sound card work or whatever.

The HP Chromebook x2 11 I've been using crashed again.

It does this all the time, usually after I've launched an android app and then shut the lid/flap to suspend. No biggie, it's ChromeOS, it booted back up in seconds... but now the stylus doesn't work.

The tool thingy says the stylus is charging, but there's just nothing happening. I tried rebooting. I tried holding down refresh and power for 60 seconds, which I read on a web page somewhere. I'm not going to power wash it just yet because there's crap I need on this box.

For the time being, I'm back on the Pixelbook, which is a really nice machine! Maybe I'll just stay here. It also has a stylus, which works, and when you put it into tablet mode, you don't have to find someplace to stash the keyboard. But it won't run Minecraft, and the battery only lasts like 4 hours :(

I'm not sure about the "60 seconds" thing, but you should try an actual hardware reset which usually resolves symptoms like those you're describing.

Sadly I don't have any recommendations, but I do have an unrecommendation cos I was looking for the same thing at the end of 2022, and went with the Acer Chromebook Spin 713.

I bought direct from Acer and the first one that came had some bad connection to the screen, so if I rotated it past a certain point the screen would go black and not come back until a full powercycle. Had to RMA that but the replacement was fine, started properly using it every day at the end of 2022, start of 2023.

After about 4 months using the replacement I noticed one of the rubber feet that keeps the bottom/back of the screen from rubbing against surfaces when you open the screen to 90 degrees had vanished leaving a little hole in the casing. Not long after that the other one became loose and started flapping around.

The thing continued falling apart from there, by a year in the casing on the screen was starting to separate the front of the screen bezel from the back/logo side, and it got worse every time I pushed the screen open and it stressed against the hinge.

What screen size are you looking for 13-14 inches or 16 inch?

Edit: Some models I found that seem interesting in the $600 range:

Asus CX34 (CX3402CBA-DH566-GR) 14" Intel 1235U https://www.cdw.com/product/asus-chromebook-plus-cx34-cx3402cba-dh566-gr-14-intel-core-i5-1235u/7649940?enkwrd=CX3402CBA-DH566-GR
Acer 514 (CBE574-1) 14" AMD 7520C https://www.cdw.com/product/acer-chromebook-plus-514-cbe574-1-14-amd-ryzen-5-7520c-16-gb-ram/7845838?pfm=srh

CDW links because they seemed like the most reputable seller I could find.

Other slightly older models on Amazon that are Marketplace sellers:

Anywhere I look for either of these models in Canadian stores they show up as 8GB of RAM instead, which is very odd, I thought the model numbers meant the hardware stayed consistent.

Asus CX34 (CX3402CBA-DH566-GR) 14" Intel 1235U
Acer 514 (CBE574-1) 14" AMD 7520C

These kind of seem up my alley though if I can actually get a 16GB one. It seems CDW doesn't ship to Canada and I just can't seem to find a 16 GB of any model in any Canadian retailers or online stores :/

Each of those models has a bunch of CPU, RAM and storage options. And it's a real roll of the dice whether it will be carried at any given retailer or sold in a country. I've had times in the past where I wanted a specific Asus Chromebook configuration only to find out it was only available in the UK, but I'm in the US.

I've had some issues with BestBuy in the past with regards to being sold refurbished stuff that was not up to code so I'm kind of extra cautious around here.

There's honestly some good deals here but I always assume the worst when it comes to buying refurbished stuff. Has anyone had any bad experiences around picking up a refurbished laptop before?

i've purchased one refurbished laptop and i would do it again. it was actually within the last few months. i had a somewhat "strict" set of guidelines i was following for this particular purchase and so far it has worked out well.

i wanted a 2-1/tablet with a user serviceable battery and detachable keyboard with intel/amd processor. so i got Dell Latitude 7210 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet i5-10310U 1.70GHz 16GB DDR3 256GB SSD from a highly rated ebay reseller.

kinda hard to beat for $300 and there are an abundance of parts available for it including directly from dell still

I bought a refurb Lenovo Chromebook S340-14 some years ago from Micro Center. I'm not sure what the exact story was--I think these were intended for education markets but were EOL pretty quickly. Either way, I purchased it a year after its original manufacture date. Aside from a sticker on the bottom indicating that it's refurbished, I couldn't have otherwise told you it wasn't brand new.

I have been looking at buying a Duet 3 but am confused by the pricing because I've seen the 128GB model go for $300AUD on sale over a year ago but also like $700 not on sale.

Am I right assuming the Duet you buy in the stores now has the same specs as the one that was released a few years ago? Or do they do a generational upgrade every 12 months?

Same deal (i.e. no revs) for the Duet 5 too? Which I saw for $500 on sale (e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/783952) but now seems to be ~$1000 in all the retailers.

The higher price tag for a tablet a few years old has me puzzled. It's such a difference I can't tell if it's a new version or just Lenovo jacking up all their prices.

If I know it's the same specs as always I'm more likely to hold out for a bargain or buy an as-new second hand one.

Googling hasn't given me much clarity, any help is appreciated thanks.

Some manufacturers (e.g. Acer) release multiple versions of their products (Chromebooks, Windows laptops, etc.) within the same generation/model year, and other manufacturers refresh a specific product every year or so, so it's entirely possible that you're looking at multiple different versions. Double-check the specs on the particular models you're comparing to make sure you're not getting a different version than you're looking for. It's common to have multiple models with different storage, RAM, CPU, and display options.

And yet, somehow, now it's my fault ...
And some webpages and shopping sites are terrible (on purpose?) at making clear exactly what model and configuration they're selling. I was shopping for a Duet about 6 months ago and one of reasons I chose another model was the lack of clarity.

The stylus on my HP Chromebook x2 x11 stopped working when I installed an OS update about 6 updates ago.

I bought a new stylus, exact same HP original stylus. That doesn't work either.

In a last-ditch "this couldn't possibly work" move, I tried the stylus from cruft jr's Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5. That works! I feel like I tried this before and that pen didn't work on this Chromebook, but I may not be remembering this correctly.

My best guess about what's happening is that the OS update included some sort of stylus driver that doesn't see the pen the machine shipped with but works with other USI pens.

They do inductive charging through the magnetic mount on the side of the screen. Maybe that's blown, which I guess would be equivalent to "breaking its own pen".

Weird coincidence that it was working right up until I rebooted to get that OS update, though.
