I dunno maybe if a 19 year old girl is saying “older creepy Hollywood elites are talking to 19 year olds on this celebrity dating app and it’s weird.” then we should hear her out? Feels maybe a little relevant? To the thread?

“The celeb (Perry’s) assistant added that she and Perry never actually met up in person — although the actor allegedly tried once and told her, “Maybe one day you can get a COVID test and come over” — because she wasn’t really interested in him.”

He invited her to meet up and she declined.

Ehh, either 19 year olds are adults or they aren't adults. If they are adults she turned down a bad date, if they aren't adults why do we let them vote?

I'm not saying Matt Perry isn't a creepy dude, I'm just saying we, as a society, made rules about when your can make your own decisions, even bad ones. and 19 is after that point.

As this mentions, you're choosing the age range to match with. Like you can't be surprised you match with older men when the app thinks that's what you want. Even if it's accidental and you didn't realise, that's totally fine, but also maybe don't be too surprised when the celebrity you match with presumes you might be into men his age. Set him right and move on it it's not your thing.

I guess so? Intentional or not I don't know. I would have assumed it was a tinder situation where you at least see who you're potentially matching with. But maybe not. Anyway, 19 year olds are adults capable of making decisions. No one is being forced into matching with him or talking to him. They can unmatch without saying a word. This whole thing is a non issue.

Colonel, there's no exposed breasts in these dark souls

Look we can agree to disagree but ultimately I believe, in my heart, that old Hollywood elites objectifying young women and pursuing them for obvious sexual encounters is damaging because it normalizes commodifying them and viewing them as disposable. This contributes to a climate where women and their entire career and even their personal lives can be interrupted and nobody gives a poo poo because it’s literally the 9th time DiCaprio has done it in the last 10 years that’s just how it is. It’s hyper normalized and it’s not a crime and lots of men that age in their 30s/40s/50s would LOVE to be sleeping with young models and actresses so the entire idea just gets settled into this extremely weird and defensive “boys will be boys” attitude or even weirder the “they are adults you should respect their agency!” as though anyone over the age of 30 really considers any 18 or a 19 year old barely above a teen in terms of emotional or mental development. In our country, you are legally allowed to murder n enemy combatant before you’re allowed to drink a beer! How can you possibly put any stock in that kind of system!?!

That’s how I feel, that’s how pretty much a everyone I know feels, if we were hanging out with a guy in his 50s and he started bragging about all the high school seniors he was loving I would think he was a hosed up loser, and if that hosed up loser who clearly just wants to gently caress young hot chicks keeps going for years, decades, etc... isn’t that where Weinstein’s come from? Do we just watch Leo trade in for a new girl every 2 years for the rest of his life and never ask what’s going on with these women (or why he makes all of them sign incredibly intense NDA’s?).

It’s very easy for me to imagine someone who just maintains this constant stream of extremely young and fresh faced women for very superficial purposes around eventually ends up as a Cosby or a Weinstein.

You don’t start out as a Cosby or a Weinstein, I think you start as a more run of the mill creep with lovely disposable attitudes about all the young models you promise jobs too and then eventually after 10/20/30 years of that unchecked behavior you’re runnning your own poo poo and think you can demand sex from anyone who works for you.

I’m really not trying to be weird or abrasive, I’m trying to communicate this as clearly and a-politically as possible. This strikes me as something we should listen to the young women about, instead of just listening to the fans of the older men assuring us it’s all normal and fine and not at all weirdly imbalanced and transparently just about sex with as young of women as possible without getting “in trouble” for it. I just want to express why I believe this topic to be fully germane to the thread topic.

Do you think celebs want to match with normal people?

The girl sounds like an rear end in a top hat for dumping private messages that included the lines like "maybe we could meet up sometime if you want to" but the app seems extremely like some roundabout way for male celebs to find hot young women that want to sleep with them.

The presumption is the women signing up for it know what the score is, and the 50+ year old celebrities hitting on them aren't expecting it to lead to a long term marriage.

Oh yeah, a couple years ago I remember Griffin Newman mentioning some sort of celebrities only dating ap in an episode of the Blank Check podcast. It does seem like something that would inevitably exist, and honestly I don't fault famous people for hiding from the general public and opting to only consort with 'their own.' On the one hand it's elitist as gently caress, but on the other hand there's a massive culture of psycho-stalkers who chase after anyone who has reached a certain level of fame, so what choice do they have?

I don't see what's wrong with the app.

People recognize that it's creepy when celebrities gently caress their fans, and that power imbalances are part-and-parcel of celebrities interacting with most people, so it's not surprising they'd prefer an app where they can assume most people are on an even playing field. Being able to date without people going OH MY GOD I LOVED YOU IN MOVIE is probably a relief, and they're not taking advantage of anyone.

Unless I'm missing something about how it works?

It's putting fame front and center though. How could it become anything but "you, naive young hot girl, have a chance to date a famous man! You'd better compete with the thousands of other people who want this famous person's attention"

Yes.
They are not letting your regular fans in the app. You have to be invited and a committee has to vote if they allow you in. The girl that sold her tabloid story wasn't just a Friends teenager fan, it was a young woman who is kinda of influencer and was definitely looking for some juicy material.

Edit: It is creepy that old men talk to younger women looking to get some sex. But in this case it wasn't a power balance abuse thing. And there's this thing called consent.

Don't infantilize young adults, they still can make their decisions and sometimes some bad ones. But don't treat them as dumb 4 year-olds. This is a poo poo I've seen a lot on social media and sometimes it leaks in this thread.

The purpose of the app is so that celebrities can attempt to date while avoiding 1) fifty thousand Joe Schmoes trying to land a date with Jennifer Aniston and 2) fifty million people gawking at their dating profile, which would make it pretty much impossible to earnestly put themselves out there.

It's not elitist, it's a way for famous people to date people with similar lifestyles as them, something that's also pretty common with the rest of the population.

I did misunderstand the app, but it's still some 19 year old Tik Tok person who most people have never heard of getting matched with Matthew Perry. She has some number of thousands of followers on her platforms which, as far as I know is totally in the realm of numbers where people have just straight up bought follows and stuff?

My point isn't that celebrities can't date people, but that specifically limiting your pool to only "famous" people does nothing to solve the problems of differences in power or influence or whatever. I would be very surprised if Matthew Perry was particularly concerned if her fame and lifestyle were similar to his in a way that made their use of the app reasonable or whatever. He just saw a hot young woman who matched with Famous Man.

And in my country you can buy a beer when you're 18. Like I don't know what to tell you but not every sexual encounter is a minefield of politics and power dynamics. If there are people over 30 who don't consider 18 year olds adults well that's on them. Don't you consider them adults?

19 year olds are perfectly capable of making decisions like if they want to gently caress a 40 year old Actor or Director or Jetski Dealer. Sure, maybe someone is going to be naïve and make mistakes or misread a situation, but that's not limited to age or maturity either.

You can go on about old Hollywood elites and all that, but a conversation about a hooking up app isn't really the place to do it. There's no power dynamics at play here, no one is being co-erced into talking or doing anything, no one is being accosted or cornered in a room. It's Tinder, or Grindr, or Adult Friend Finder, or any of those. You don't end up there by accident.
