I love hearing set stories where, like, some super raunchy scene is being filmed and the older Valley couple that owns the place are just having breakfast in the nook like it ain’t no thing. Even better when they just casually make the cast and crew coffee or spectate or whatever.

One of the funniest things I've seen was, in the middle of standard porn video, the camera panning out and spinning around, Taxi Driver style, revealing the dozen or so really bored people staring at two very attractive people loving on a couch.

A- list is not A-list. You have to read these things for a while to figure out the little clues in how they talk.

I think Scott would be A- list Mostly TV Actor though.

Isn’t there some BDSM porn flick from the 90s that has a scene like that, except that some of the bored/confused people in the crowd are professional actors like Carrie Fisher? If I recall hearing about this correctly (and if it even exists) the project was funded with money from a bunch of showbiz people who were sold on the grounds that it was a particularly experimental independent film. The backers were offered a cameo and so a bunch of actors showed up at a warehouse and watched a topless lady get tied up and, like, flogged or something and the whole thing was filmed.

If I’m remembering it right, the movie ended up leaking onto the internet with titles like “CARRIE FISHER PORN” even though she’s only standing in the background fully clothed with a bunch of other people like they’re watching some performance art, so she sued to get it taken down and I think she later mentioned it in an interview. Maybe they talked about it on VH1 one time? I remember seeing a censored clip that looked super awkward and uncomfortable, with like quick shots of notable faces in the crowd.

And no, I’m not confusing this story with the one about the BDSM movie Cameron Diaz was an extra in before she became a star.

I think it makes a lot of sense to gradate like that, if you want to be able to distinguish better between anonymized celebrities. Plus the gradation itself mirrors the American grading system, so it seems as sensible and easily understandable as any other suggestion? Contrary to an A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J/K/L-list system would clash horribly with the more general idea of A/B/C/D-list celebrities used outside the site itself.

I think there's also a distinction between regular A list, and Permanent A List, which some celebrities reach and then they get a free pass on the A list for life. Like Seth Rogan was regular A list about ten years ago, when he was starring in multiple movies every year, how he's kinda faded a bit and I'd probably not call him A list anymore. But guys like Bruce Willis or Al Pacino are always A list regardless of how much direct to video schlock they put out.

Works fine for what? General celebrity talk? Because the whole "anonymous references to the heinous crimes of specific but not openly stated celebrities" aspect of it certainly seems like something that could require more gradation in your code, and it's not like it's super complicated either.

Which is really just the other side of the system that makes sure some people get shut out of Hollywood for the most minor "slights".

I recently started listening to a podcast called The Canon for semi-intellectual analysis of movies on my commute. I'd only listened to newer episodes with the permanent cohost Amy Nicholson and a rotating guest host and I found it a fun, nerdy dive into movies.

I recently downloaded some older episodes that had a different format with a second permanent male host and it was unlistenable. He was completely closed to his co-host's opinions, bulldozed over interesting arguments, was insulting and egotistical and came off incredibly abrasive with no capability of self-reflection.

Then I realized it was Devin Faraci who got brought up earlier in the thread. I am completely unsurprised that the dude got accused of not respecting other people's boundaries.

If you ever find yourself wondering why video games haven't quite broken through to the level of a respectable art form, look at gamers relationship with the female form. Not necessarily the games themselves, even, but how gamers react. I remember there was a review of some PS2 game, a futuristic 3rd person shooter, where the reviewer spent about three paragraphs of a not that long review talking about how nice the main character's rear end was.

Yeah, this.

This issue is the definition of low hanging fruit because the point of focus is breasts and the guy saying it is unattractive (good to know we're all still in agreement about making GBS threads on ugly people).

But the reality is this kind of stuff happens literally every single time there's a film or tv adaption of any medium. Michael Keaton wasn't buff enough to play Batman. [Actor] doesn't look anything like [character from book, comic, game]. It's the same. every. time. There were people bitching all over the place that Tom Cruise was too short to play Jack Reacher back when that adaption first came out, too. Actually I remember that one specifically because because the author of the books responded to fan criticism by saying what I've felt ever since to be one of the best, most intelligent perspectives on the issue.

Lee Childs posted:

“Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.”

This really clicked with me, not only because Cruise is a complete loving psycho that you can literally feel goes balls to the wall in every movie, but because I instantly realized how true it was about every adaption I'd ever seen. I had been one of those grumpy little kids unhappy with Keaton as Batman, (the guy didn't even have abs ffs!) But looking back with the benefit of age I later realized that Keaton's neurotic Wayne-mask hiding the shark-like real personality of Batman beneath was one of if not the best most compelling portrayals of the character in the entire medium. I realized it never actually mattered how much an actor looked or sounded or even acted like the fictional character they were playing. In actuality whether or not an actor had succeeded in being truly great at portraying an adapted character hinged on whether or not that actor was able to really capture and project the spirit of that character.
