i can’t believe i never realized this but having a candidate write tests for a piece of your already existing code would be real good interview material

Giving interviewees a legitimate reason to add a boilerplate copyright to the top of their fix buzz is not good interview material.

Ask them how to unit test a function that calls to a remote database when you can't guarantee a network connection at the time of test execution. That can sometimes be a pretty good way to sift out peasants.

If you ask someone to unit test a function and it results in a database call, successful or not, they've failed to make a unit test.

The point is that the unit test should not result in the database call in order to succeed at the question.

The joke is that even well defined behavior can contain bugs when written and you seem to have selectively dismissed this as a possibility.

I had one of them actually pass on even listing my profile, I don't really have any UI experience and I think they wanted people like that... anyway a year later I got an email "We're really sorry we couldn't help you out... do you have any friends that are looking"

Sorry it didn't work out, do you have any hot friends?

still haven't gotten an interview yet (7 weeks of hunting), but today i got three linkedin recruiter messages, two messages from internal recruiters, and one message from an agency that actually listed the client and position in the message and it's actually a good match for me, so yay.

unfortunately one of the companies is tesla

still gonna do the interview, just for practice

one of the other companies is a chinese refrigeration equipment manufacturer interested in 'ai firmware' so hmm, definitely going to that interview in 'practice mode' too

For me it's always a yellow flag when a reviewer puts their job title as the title of the review, although Glassdoor is mostly at fault for that. Red flags are the lone five-star, slightly paternal review in the sea of negative reviews. Experts Exchange has one for a position that never existed. I tried reporting it, to no avail.

a company rating >= 4 because it 100% means they're astroturfing

I found a company that's ~85% one-liner 5 star ratings with the rest describing dysfunction and sweatshop-like working conditions at length. averages out to a 3.5 company rating. they might want me for a backend role but I'm kind of hesitant
