there were a bunch of twitter posts earlier this year from ex-microsoft people that basically amounted to "there is a culture of gaslighting employees during reviews amongst management"

Apply to more companies. If you send out like 50 to 100 amortized over a month you'll get a steady flow

If you're far into the process and you know an offer is imminent, you can more or less force their hand if you want to. "I'd like to evaluate the offer as a whole, including salary, benefits, and leave time. Please send me all available information and we can discuss after I've had a chance to review all aspects of compensation." or "I don't have a number in mind, but will consider any reasonable offer. I'm sure we can come to a mutually satisfying agreement." If you're feeling bold you can always say "Just let me know what your budget is and I'll let you know if we can come to an agreement."

Or if you just want to go scorched earth you can always go "I dunno, what does the supervisor for this position make?" and ask for that

thats dumb. effective scorched earth is "ok... whats the RSU ladder look like?"

I had an onsite three weeks ago and received an offer the following Monday pending a background check. The background check is still underway and I've been prodding the recruiters every couple days trying to get an update and I was CC'ed in on some of their internal communication revealing no one has any idea wtf is going on and this background screening company is dragging their rear end at every step.

I had other offers and if I wasn't moving to the opposite corner of the country for this I would have told them to screw off already.

Summary: see thread title.

Recruiter asked me to throw out a number so I asked for a $120k raise. Seemed taken aback, but I got told the max base for that payband, which is 90k raise.

Edit: although that includes a move to a higher CoL(not SF though)

If you're not in some kind of super high salary variance career, never ever ever mention a number until you know to a high certainty you're getting an offer. There's absolutely 0 benefit in it. You wouldn't negotiate on price for a car before you've test driven it, why would you negotiate a job before you've walked in the door?
