of course the most likely outcome is a 23 year old Stanford grad asks me to whiteboard some arcane poo poo when I told them that I am not interested in going through a vetting process aimed at sw engineers when software engineering is not why they would be reaching out to me in the first place.

also, aside from equity, my pay isn’t far off from what I am seeing for some roles posted already, and I am in a reasonable col city about two hours from dc

look at me, getting grumpy over stupid poo poo that hasn’t happened yet. I thought faangs where the thing.

are you able to work at a different campus? i wouldn’t move to the bay area even if my salary was doubled either. also equity is going to be half your total comp at google, so i wouldn’t just disregard the salary element outright

the government does this too. in Medicare/Medicaid they're called health risk assessments. they're critical to population management

my wife is having to do the whole song and dance.

the most promising one is significant pay bump, but a temporary 3 month term.

i figure if she lands it, she can collect fat paychecks while looking for a real permanent job, as opposed to collecting zero dollars, apart from my disability checks otherwise.

it just sucks, she’s been getting interviews and her specialty is very narrow. so there’s few other qualified people that even exist for these jobs. so they’re either ghosting her or just taking their sweet time. but if they’re ghosting her it makes me wonder who else they’re finding? it’s a very small hiring pool in that field and she has a solid resume with no red flags or black marks that i’m aware of.

Is this something you can just get done somewhere for a few dollars? I get wildly different body fat estimates from all the other inaccurate sources like those electrical current scales.

Hydrostatic weighing isn't crazy expensive, usually less than 100 dollars, but I think the places that will do it are mostly in big cities across the country, about the same availability as a Dexascan, which is also pretty accurate. It's more finding a place and the time to do it.

Hydrostatic weighing is an experience though. You have to expel all the air from your lungs, and then sit perfectly still while getting dunked underwater while you have to hold your breath - which you do not have now because you expelled all the air from your lungs.

a question for the people who have done this more than me; ive been looking at job listings and found a few that look decent but they require "expert" level skills in a language i have no experience in. should i bother applying to them? i have 12 years experience in other languages and am pretty confident i could pick one up given a few weeks but im scared that i would go into an interview and get asked some basic language specific question and look like an idiot

depends on what else they list and how closely that fits your non-language skills. if the role is like "low-level network programming BUT IN ERLANG" and you do low-level network programming in something else, gently caress it and apply, maybe do some practice/tutorial readthroughs if you get past the phone screen.

if it's something that really and truly requires expert knowledge of a language (idk, writing a compiler for it or w/e), then reconsider, but most postings aren't that

one of the companies i was looking at has both a frontend js/react and backend python positions. my current job is full stack js/knockout/c# so maybe i can ask them to fit me where they think i would work better

that is basically how the misunderstanding happened

their purchasing budget was normal and in line with like, spending at other jobs i was qualified for... and there were like five direct reports... and the job description was written crappily

turns out it was like a 500 person firm and what i thought was a team lead was actually appointed by, and reported to, the board of directors

If using BMI means that less people will be eligible for discounts, then yes they will absolutely keep using that as a metric.
