Before shortlisting it's acceptable, because realistically people don't have time to write out responses to every shitheel that sends in an application. I guess they could have an automated system, but I don't think you can expect that. Once contact is established though, I find it exceptionally unprofessional to leave someone in the dark after a rejection. It's literally two minutes to copy paste a generic rejection email and mass send it to all candidates on a secret cc.

I unironically like the automated systems telling me I was filtered out of the process. last monday I received an email 4 in the morning telling me that I was out, it was pretty sweet. I don't like to spend hours on a coding test (which I thought I did alright-ish) and then get no responses from the company.

Apple has ghosted me 3 times for different positions after I was multiple interviews deep for each one. After talking to other folks who haven’t made it through the Apple hiring process either, it seems like it’s pretty standard for them

I did a test and it was just 2 questions on hackerrank but they were so weirdly written and ambiguous that I spent most of the hour trying to decipher the instructions. when I finally did it I couldn't finish them on time, it was too bad because the questions seemed pretty easy despite that.

I've been debating whether or not to straight up ask him, but it's probably better for his stress levels if he thinks I don't know. There's nothing I could do to retain him if I knew, given some circumstances in his situation. I'm just calling in sick tomorrow so I can go to my interview. It's a senior position, and I probably could nail it if I hadn't been getting so rusty dev-wise, but we'll see how I do. It's a weird feeling not knowing if I'd want to do the job or not, but I have a friend at the company who thinks I'd be a good fit for the role.

I wrote earlier about using JavaScript without typescript and how it was doable with some minor difficulties. after spending the past week trying to understand a bad contractor's code I'm now convinced that doing a large scale JavaScript project without any typing is doable only if you're the only programmer and you are as strict as gently caress with your variables and properties. any sense of fun and creativity is lost as I'm just struggling to figure out what this guy was doing and it's made all the more difficult by the fact that I have no clue what's in any given variable without a debugger, and even that fails because sometimes one object can have two sets of properties depending on the application state. it's drained any desire I had to work with this codebase. even worse my boss has said many times that he doesn't miss types and loves the new codebase. time to start hunting in earnest I guess.
