champagne posting posted:I expect most companies will realize they either don't have the data needed or the need for data science. For them it'll all be branded back to business intelligence and it'll be back to business as usual i agree with you fully. >50% of “data science” as it was before covid hit will be rolled into combinations of bi specialists + data engineering specialists, with many of the simpler problems like chatbot pointing to support articles or structured data record labelling being served by datarobot and automl et. al. what the field has going for it right now is that there’s a genuine deficit of technical specialists who can properly characterise data quality or value, and it also helps that managers, even people gone through ds ic->management track, have a rather difficult time quantifying value added by data science in many fields (e.g. what’s the dollar value added by improving adaptive search results from 80% recall@3 to 80% recall@2 for a collaborative user interface design program? is achieving that in 3 months slow or fast progress?) remaining well paying opportunities will genuinely require e.g. phd in computer vision, because the factually required (and, albeit less swiftly increasing, the necessary) specialisation level is going quickly up already anyways. then we’ll probably get, like in 10-20 years, another renaissance of data science when more and more of big companies migrate fully into cloud infrastructure, gaining access ml tooling of various vendors. for all the hype cloud has, traditional enterprises are really not in a hurry with it, and for plenty fair reasons at that

lol my dipshit idiot boss signed me up for the comptia data+ certification. I don’t work with data like that at all and I have a huge disdain for certs, but it should be a cakewalk cause it’s a pilot program and they always pass people in those. let’s see what they have to say about it quote:CompTIA Data+ is an early-career data analytics certification for professionals tasked with developing and promoting data-driven business decision-making. lmao I have senior in my title and I don’t touch data or reporting at all. we actually had our most senior dev, absolute genius juggernaut who was with the company 7 years, leave because he had been tasked with making loving pdf reports for a customer and wasn’t doing any work on his normal product. I probably won’t have a new job by the time class starts in Feb so might as well take a free week off work for some learnin. except I know I’ll still be responsible for deliverables in that period. hate this place the hardest part about hunting now is I’m worried I’m at my salary cap. a lot of the jobs that would be a nice upgrade in pay require poo poo I refuse to do (clearance with the us govt) or specialized skills I don’t have outright, but could learn rapidly. I guess that’s a good filter, just state my expected pay to recruiter and if they laugh and move on, good riddance

just had an interview with a first-party recruiter for a US company. they were actually on PTO in Ukraine visiting their parents. it was like 10pm there. a great "show, don't tell" of what they mean by "remote-first" and "unlimited PTO". I guess their motivation for mentioning that was kinda like the spelling mistakes in Nigerian prince emails to filter for the most gullible?

I'm moving forward anyway. best case I get pleasantly surprised with what else I learn of company culture, worst case I get PSAT-style practice doing tech screens

for anyone in AU looking to get a position at AWS: a colleague of mine got one today, SRE (sys devops i think is that even a thing?) role paying $140k AUD pre-tax plus stock options and a signing bonus. may involve moving to Sydney which would be a big lol, weird that they're giving little clarity as to what is and isn't remote work. the interview process was entirely via zoom, 5 hours in one day with a 3 hour break in the middle. standard stuff really and no take-homes. the role was for building out some BGP peering stuff that AWS are doing with Python as the main language. dude has little Python experience and only knows C# but he still passed the interview. soooo yeah, this dude is pretty competent imo but also an anti-vaxxer and semi-chud so the fact that he landed an SRE role at that base makes me think they're desperate in AU. if you're in AU and looking to switch then it might be worth hitting up some AWS listings or asking recruiters about them. edit: oh yeah re the anti-vaxx thing it's already an issue with him at our current employer and he's being moved off a customer contract because said customer has vaccine mandates. i asked him what he'd do if AWS have vaccine mandates and he just said "lol for $140k i'll just get the vaccine" lmao these ppl Pile Of Garbage fucked around with this message at 13:56 on Dec 22, 2021 |

Is it extremely unadvisable to accept contract work through a staffing agency? I've done work by contract, but unfamiliar with this. The staffing agency are the ones that pay you. The service they provide is knowledge of your background and skills, so that their clients don't have to interview multiple times. They still usually interview you once. I'm pretty much on board now, besides getting assigned a client, which happens in January.

I got this email today from a human resources firm hiring on behalf of someone else: "Hello! I hope this email finds you doing well. I received your application for a Python Developer job I’m working on for a client. This role (and other positions I’m working on) are full-time, direct hire. The clients are unable to sponsor a Visa. Can you confirm you are authorized to work in the US now and in the future without assistance? If so, I’d love to schedule time for us to chat today or early next week. I would like to go over your resume, understand what your requirements are for your next position, and talk to you about a few roles that might line up with what you are looking for/needing. Thanks for your time and interest. I look forward to hearing from you." I was visiting my mom in the hospital at the time it was sent, 1pm, because she went to the emergency room a few days earlier when her colonostomy bag started to drain into an open wound from a previous surgery and vice versa, noticed when bright red blood started appearing in her poop pouch. Anyway, I'm thinking of not mentioning that I'm responsible for taking care of her when she comes home, like packing her wounds with gauze to make sure they heal from the bottom up, without which inaccessible pockets of skin prone to infection can form, or anything like that. I may have to go to the hospital some time if the surgical team says they've changed her wound care and I need to come in for a lesson. I don't want to be seen as making excuses or make them afraid I need accommodation or that I'd request leave as soon as I'm hired, so I guess not mentioning it is probably best. I've applied to like 200 places and this is my first legit programming interview offer ever I had a prior discussion here from when I accidentally applied to a non-remote job and got a reply (my reply ended up getting no reply) https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=1&threadid=3845966&pagenumber=462&perpage=40#post517436168 It's 6:53pm now. I'll email them tomorrow morning that I'm a U.S. citizen and available any time that day or the 26th, or I could go ahead and send it now galenanorth fucked around with this message at 01:07 on Dec 23, 2021 |

The recruiter said that the people hiring for her positions were looking for someone with work experience but that she'd keep my resume on file for more junior positions for later. When asked about my personal projects, I think I started to ramble before coming to a stop, but otherwise I think it went all right. I got asked if the "three years" I worked on my projects was 8 hours a day or whenever I had time. I said whenever I had time. I divided my 2,850 total hours by 52, then by 40, then by 3 and it came out to 3.6 hours per day, so that was the right answer, but I hope they don't interpret it as "hardly anything". Maybe I should put the exact amounts in my resume. edit: When I include 5,393.7 hours spent studying (8,243.7 total including the personal projects), though, that comes out to 10.6 hours per day by the same process, though that's actually over six years. galenanorth fucked around with this message at 16:38 on Dec 28, 2021 |

Since I have decided to look for a job, the best I could muster was updating linkedin a bit and couldn't find the motivation to even work on my resume. Current work was just consuming my time and I was exhausted. Now that we've beaten a deadline I was given the week off and first thing I see on linkedin is a former coworker just got a director position at a company I'm interested in working, which I have also partnered with on projects in the past. My job title aligns with their open positions and the salaries are right, and it's all remote. This is almost too perfect but I finally have the motivation to slam out some killer resume poo poo and get that job. So for all you cyber punks out there losing hope because of depression and exhaustion and work killing you, there may be hope! I'm gonna slow roll this a bit because I don't wanna get too excited! This dude has actually interviewed me before as part of an internal thing so let's hope he still likes me.
