You say that as if some Americans didn't complain that you had to fight Nazis, and TNO sold well without catering directly to Americans so why not keep doing that?
Also I might be wrong but my impression of Russia was that while sharing their ideology was pretty ok, actual swastika Nazis were still bad because they killed a lot of people in the great patriotic war and all.

He definitely touched on something that really soured the game: in its basic design, the maps are quite small, but with an extraordinary amount of "stuff" crammed in - fights, loots, etc. Consequently, even just travelling from location to location is an exhausting grind, because you're fighting the same enemies over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. When I load up a Fallout game, I'm actively picking up poo poo all the time. In Outer World, I found myself ignoring half the loot, and just breaking down any weapons I found. Plus, the shotgun-type weapons sucked poo poo.

There was the another factor too; exploring yielded nothing, and I'm not even talking about loot; you'd go to the far corners of the map to find that little building placed there and... ammo and maybe a large version of the monster you killed 20 of along the way. FO3 had some bad plot parts, not gonna argue that, but you could pretty much ignore that and find little stories sprinkled throughout the wasteland. In this I'm pretty sure 99% of the content was connected to a quest in some way; you might just accidentally solve that part of the quest out of order by exploring. Once I kinda wrapped my head around this being a non-exploratory game wrapped in the trappings of one and just straight ran the quests it became less frustrating. Also once I realized character progression was meaningless past a certain point besides banking skill points to make a surprise difficult check at the end.

And yeah, his assessment on some of the "surprises" was dead on, like the retirement plan and also the cannibal house; both of those were telegraphed seconds into them, with the latter having the extra magic of a literal "find the secret" quest with a map point popping up to tell you exactly where to go for the reveal if you hadn't figured it out. The only way those could have maybe been salvaged is going the route of parody with the MC having the option to sarcastically call out the twist as an option, because those are kinda peak Fallout-edgy.

The Outer Worlds had a lot of good ideas, but it just came across as bland. It was a bowl of plain potato chips; it's nobody's favorite, but it will get finished anyway.

The New Colossus is the only Wolfenstein game that has ever been set in America, and the next Wolfenstein game most likely won't be set in America either. It's really not that big of a deal. I'd agree if they decided to drop everything and make the series America-centric, but it's the second game in a relatively new series and it doesn't look like that's what they're planning.

Well I mean it's America like 20 years after they surrendered to the nazis. It's probably pretty well occupied at this point.

TNC takes place in the US for the same reason that 99% of all media takes places there. Because hoora murika.

i am pretty sure in the canon, russia is basically a nuclear grave yard like NYC but much worse. Africa is still an active war zone since the nazis since its basicaly the last active front against the nazis. maybe we will go there in 3. my issue with tnc was we didnt really get enough of america. liike its cool you side with the black panthers and i guess 1960s cspam but i wanted to fight american Nazis and poo poo. i wanted to fight the klan more and maybe free slaves and camps and poo poo. i feel like TNO did a better job showing and not just telling about the nazi rule. TNC is mostly tell and dont really show.

yeah. i like the games story and such and i hope a sequel happens some day because i think with more polish and changes, it would work alot better. i know alot of people on the game thread didnt like because it didnt end with socialism forever ending, which i sorta agree with but like noah says my big issue is that its a love letter to NV and in some ways it gets concepts of what made that game good but it doesnt have the depth. quests needed more stuff to them. it needed more of a yes man type path.

Something that I had a big problem with that I don't see brought up too much is the nuke lust that TNC has. There's a lot of them that go off and you do two of them and the game doesn't treat it as seriously as it should. It was very jarring.

the one is relatively deep underground is more of a hosed up bunker buster and the other is a "gently caress it, mayber it will work to push us out and the nazis have murdered everyone here anyway. id say it does a better job with nukes than current day fallout does. like i understand your point. but so far only 3 have been used in the series and they have been only used on nazi military targets.

It's not like TNC was spouting off some American Exceptionalism propaganda. The game went to great lengths to portray most white Americans as bootlickers who were more than happy with Nazi rule and pretty much immediately re-legalized slavery.

yeah. thats kinda why i dont get the "but the game is oorah" critque. like sure could it have gone farther. yeah but the game basicaly showed a whole ton of white america bent the knee instantly to the nazis either because they were shitfucks oppertunistics like Rip or because they were cowards and such. i kinda wish the game had been longer and we had gotten a secondary villian like richard spencer type. i mean i know thats what Bj's dad is supposed to be. but idk.

I've heard the same complaint with Modern Warfare and that's always confused me. Maybe later entries / other CoD games got pretty oorah, can't say I follow them enough to be sure, but wasn't the game about British special forces? Pretty sure the American viewpoint char just dies in a nuke.

After the first game all the British characters join an "international task force" that is wholly controlled by the US military.

Until a bad apple general betrays them and the country he serves, then they have to go rogue to get the work (fighting Russians) done despite theoretically still being backed by the other nations who formed this task force.

Every time Wolfenstein talk comes up I get reminded of the video essay that got me to buy the New Order. It had an interesting take on how it portrays terrorism in a positive light and how at points you attack civilian targets like the bridge, where you do end up killing innocent people. Really made me think that the game might have more depth to its story than what everyone expected out of a Wolfenstein game.

Shame to see that going down the drain these days.

I meant that what got me to buy the game was that the essay showed that the game story was a lot deeper than what I expected out of Wolfenstein. Most of what I heard of it at the time was "You shoot nazis with big guns its fun", so I was expecting the game to a decent FPS with a silly plot that didn't really take itself too seriously. With BJ being a Rambo character who killed a million Nazis and didn't give a gently caress. So when the essay went "At one mission you perform what amounts to a terror attack on a bridge that both civilians and military use, killing innocents and Nazi soldiers alike. BJ stares in terror for a second before he's pushed to get on the ruin of the bridge to get a mcguffin and continue the story.", that caught my curiosity as it seemed to be deeper than what I expected out of the game.

It was several years ago since I saw it and I've had zero luck finding it again over the years. Afraid its one of those things lost to time.
