Is fanfiction . net's userbase aging or is there a reasonable influx of new users and outflux of the old? I'm sure there are people who have been posting on the site for ages and never left, but has there been an uptick in more adult themes as the authors have grown and never left (and presumably improved), or is it pretty much the same as it's always been as a relatively safe space to publicly explore creative writing? I have no personal interest in the site anymore but I am interested in how it's used these days.

It's a bit of everything, I think? I've been in the fanfiction hellhole since 2005 (holy poo poo I was 12), and some of it is people growing up and wanting to explore more (I'm 26, and I recently checked an old .txt I saved with links of fics I liked back when I was 14. I can't stand most of them anymore),. Tbh most people have moved on to AO3 at this point because it is has a much better search engine plus tags, and the attitude there is 'write whatever the gently caress you want just tag it appropriately', unlike FF.net where technically you can't put adult content in there (adult content existed before, you just had to actively look for it in LiveJournal or dedicated fandom fanpages). While a decent amount of ppl just post their stuff on both, what I've seen more is that the people that still use it are preteens or people in relatively older fandoms who remain there because that's where most fics of their fandoms are located (for example, compare the amount of FFVII fics in both FF.net and AO3 to a newer game like Overwatch).

From my experience, while drama still exists, fanfiction has become noticeably more chill over the years. Some of what I think are the factors of it are
a) Older fans growing up and the stories they write growing up as well.
b) Believe it or not, writing standards have increased.
c) Despite what point B implies, there's been a growing trend of 'gently caress it, write whatever you want,'.
d) People are re examining things that were considered worth of mockery before, like Mary Sues, female character bashing, and shipping wars (to an extent), which removes a lot of hostility.
f) If you don't feel like spending an afternoon searching, you can just google search '[Thing you like] fic recs' and that gives you a headstart, or just ask on a fandom discord.

(that said, coffeeshop and tattoo artist AUs are becoming the new high school AUs and most of them kinda samey :/)

Same! I've always found it fascinating as a cultural phenomenon. Also, I've studied languages a bit and I find fascinating how slang and jargon in fanfiction/fandoms has changed (the infamous lemon terminology, for example). I've been tempted to make concordances and the like with fanfiction via AntConc or something of the sort.

Isn't the best fanfiction the one where Jesus is in space?

Also lol, freaking Brittany Venti. It's ridiculous how she talks about freaking Benito Mussolini as potentially being "grandpoppy" when Alessandro Mussolini was born...*checks watch* SEVENTEEN years after Benito Mussolini died. Like, I don't think she was at grandpoppy's lap hearing stories about the glory days of Il Duce.

I mean, its not really a cultural phenomenon as much as its a result of very modern ideas of "ownership" when it comes to ideas. People making their own stories with popular characters has always been with us, its just this idea of "official" and "unofficial" fiction that is new.

Shakespeare's poo poo is hilarious because there was zero intellectual property laws period.

dudes used to sit in the pits in front of the stage and write the dialog as actor's spoke it and sell copies. I mean, Shakespeare's works are all derivative of others works in the first place on top of that.

I'd love to see more video essays that explore internet subcultures, their growth and change, what created and killed them, ect. Quinton's Fallen Titan series comes close, but his early episodes were focused on individuals and the show has pivoted to be more about Youtube trends than general internet things. Down the Rabbit Hole has done a few.

Notably Othello was based off a much much more racist Italian story.

Generally speaking, even though a lot of fanfic is porn*, fanficcers (at least the ones on AO3) aren't especially interested in visual porn. So probably they don't think much of it because the images aren't as important as the action and concepts, which you're unlikely to find in deep fake porn. It's not just that these actors/characters are fuckin', it's what they're doing and saying surrounding the fuckin', and how the fuckin' makes them feel, and stuff like that.

*People never pay much attention to the rather healthy non-porn and non-romantic sides of fanfic, mainly because it's not as funny.

ArfJason posted:

I mean, in Shakespeare's time fanfic was basically "normal writing." The idea of proprietary stories is extremely recent and nothing like the way humans told stories for the majority of history. It's a lot more natural to come up with stories based on preexisting characters and narratives than it is to come up with something mostly original.

It's hard to say how much of the fiction of that time was based on getting characters to gently caress, though that's hardly a new thing, either. Humans love fuckin'.

When I learned about deep fakes I wanted to make trailers for movies I've joked about for years into a reality, starting with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby 'Road' movies set in various US foreign policy fuckups of the era.

I'm waiting for it to get refined a bit more first and also for there to be tutorials that don't creep me out. There is so much weird art to be created and hopefully there will be more of that as people start to look beyond the porn.

They are often too stupid to properly defend themselves so it makes for entertaining internet bloodsport.
And he does debate other people, but the chud debates and internet drama gets the most engagement and therefore the most recommends.
