Ghost Luke grabbing a sword, while stupid in a why did obiwan not just do this sense, is cool in a "the force us more powerful than any weapon" sense.

It does look better than the other get-up they had her in, but I still lol at the fact that they wanted to give her Luke's hand-me-downs.

A planet wide city world that was the capital of the new republic got blown up.

Probably in early drafts it was coruscant, back when Abram's team was semi-joking about having Jar Jar Binks skull on display. But they chickened out obviously.

Even tho I'm a big prequel fan I would have preferred a ST that had that kinda attitude. At least it's an ethos!

I can't.

Since neither of us can provide proof, let's go to the evidence. The planet we see destroyed in TFA is the seat of government, and has what appears to be a massive globe-spanning city, both traits of Coruscant. The film-makers demonstrate an understanding that the audience is likely to assume something familiar-looking is a thing we've seen before, so they take care to let us know that the desert planet is called Jakku*, the space-fascists are called the First Order, etc. No such care is taken in the case of capital city planet.

*Even this is insufficient to distinguish it from Tatooine, as we can point to real world examples of places being renamed in the wake of political upheaval

There’s actually nothing in the film that indicates whether the city briefly seen before being destroyed is planet wide or not

I’m still trying to figure out how this series was supposed to work. In ep 4, Luke refers to Ben as that crazy old hermit out in the desert that he didn’t know much about. But this show seemed to imply that Ovi Wan would now mentor a young Luke and take him on wacky adventures or something, perhaps even do that with Leia too.

**~~the force~~**

The extra credit question is actually way easier to answer, the guy loves Vader, "I will finish what you started" is the meme line of Kylo, of course he'd want Vader's lightsaber.

Haha that article says it's delayed because Kennedy didn't like the scripts. It's so great that fans celebrated when Lucas gave up control and now it's the exact same situation where one person is deciding everything except your at the mercy of a corporate stooge who's never written or directed a film.

I'm more talking about the fan reaction to it, which at least initially was "finally we've taken Star War back from the hands of the despot Lucas!" It was absurd at the time and it looks even more absurd now.

Star Wars is maybe the most toyetic franchise ever, but Disney is obsessed with merchandising and Abrams loves pointless MacGuffins. The plot of Episode IX revolves around things in a way none of the other movies do, because of course it does. I don't think any little kids want to buy a Sith Wayfinder or that lovely-looking BudK dagger, but Abrams loves his petty mysteries.

That’s Cloud City, on Bespin.

I also thought it was the Senate building at first, because the Senate is designed to resemble Cloud City, but then they pan down to show it floating.

Yea even his earliest leaked draft had a ghost luke following Kylo around, and again I must reiterate how baffling it is this was not in TROS

Having every Ben scene also include ghost Luke giving him poo poo would have made the movie infinitely better and Mark Hamill would probably go for it. Hell having Ben be caught between Palpatine and ghost Luke as he tries to figure out what path to take would have made a good conflict.

But nah Luke shows up only for Rey

I hate to be a fanboy, but you'd probably enjoy Matt Christman's take on it. Basically that Star Wars was never the work of just one person, and it's impossible for Disney Star Wars to be any good because the amount of money at stake demands that the risk management aspects of filmmaking overwhelm and obliterate the art. My take is very much the same, although I like the prequels.

Yea I mean in the end no matter how many creative people do the work, the decisions still funnel down to one person who has ultimate veto power and when you trade someone like Lucas for someone like Kennedy, the business priorities overwhelm artistic concerns almost completely.
