Lampsacus posted:Calling it now, star wars from now on will be using the same characters in the same starwalker saga for the next decade under the guise of parallel universes to justify redoing variations of the same dead horse story. It's at least more interesting than endless interquels and side stories about background characters. Which is probably what they're going to keep doing instead.

As someone else asked - why didn't they catch this with test footage? But, of course, there was no test footage. Just Disney tossing down a bowl of gruel in front of us, saying "Here's you slop, you'll eat it and like it."

I'm ready for Into the Forceverse: Multiverse of Palps, where Palpatine plays multiple versions of himself: a flamboyant pianist, the Prime Minister of Canada, a phantom of the opera, one where he's played by Tilda Swinton.

I can't wrap my head around how bad the writing of this show was. When they didn't steal shot for shot from better animated shows and videogame cutscenes they couldn't write a character getting from point A to point B convincingly. Did Reeva have loyal stormtroopers waiting with a shuttle and bacta tank?

It’s so odd how non-memeable the show is. The prequels, poo poo as they are, are full of dialogue that can be mined a line or two at a time. The memes, love them or hate them, are part of the redemption and affection that the films have. This show though, there’s just so little. Obi Wan’s “I will do what I must” leaped out as something you could use out of context (even though he very much did not do what he must), but most lines were so… empty, flat, insipid, mundane. Considering that the main audience for the show is people who would be into this stuff, it’s odd how aggressively anti-memeable the material is. I think I’ve seen more from the trailer than from the show itself. Give the people what they want, holy poo poo.

There are very few memorable lines because by and large they refrained from any character ever talking to each other about anything other than the immediate scene they were in or vague platitudes about the future.

It's amusing that all of Episode 5 is about how Anakin easily gets overconfident, which allows Obi-Wan to best him, but then when he and Vader have their final confrontation in Episode 6 Obi-Wan just beats him with sheer strength. This show doesn't even take its own lessons to heart. It would also have been better if there was less of the Obi-Wan/Leia stuff and more flashbacks to Anakin and Obi-Wan before RotS

It should have been 6 episodes of obi spending his nights as an off work factory guy working on his Harley speeder and hanging out with his new space buds

TBF, Anakin did just walk away from the fight when Obi-Wan was buried in the hole, but yeah after that it was just pure Obi-Power, after a montage that was like all Leia with a brief clip of Luke.

I like that a show that started with a school shooting ended with a literal child literally arming herself and talking about how that's how it's going to be from now on. Also evidently alderaan has weapons now.

All the way through the series everytime they lit up a lightsaber I thought this looks awful - Took awhile before I remembered - way back when I was photographing live shows, it would be a coinflip if the lighting rig was OG bulbs or a new LED setup - if it was the former, great, photos would come out just fine. If the latter, loving awful - the LED bulbs put out an incredibly narrow band of color that murders shadow and contrast and leaves almost absolutely nothing left that you can use to rebalance a shot. Pretty much exactly why Obiwan's face looked so washed out in every fight. Also - did I miss a trick or did Reva get to Tatooine real loving quick? Stabbed and left for dead, she finds Organa's message - at this point Vader is on his shuttle heading to pick up the chase on the Star Destroyer. Then she has to find a ship in this abandoned planet, crawl aboard, fly to Tatooine, land etc - and the chase between the Pathers and the Star Destroyer is still going on; have they really been evading Vader for multiple hours? I thought maybe they were doing some slipped timeline stuff, but nope.

This applies to every live action show but why do they all look like they were run through a grey filter? Tatooine always looks so washed out like they're trying to do Villeneuve's take on Arrakis instead of it having a vibrant blue sky and shining dunes.

Because they know fans will eat it up anyway, so why try? Sure, it might not make them as much money as word of mouth spreads, but that's money in the future. Spending cash on writing, editing and actually doing test shots with the lovely nightlight lightsabres costs money now. Megillah Gorilla posted:This made a lot of things clearer - well, except for the footage. The thing is, they did do tests... in 2014 when they were filming The Force Awakens. ![]() So they'd been using these types of sabers when filming for 7 years without issues, and probably didn't anticipate that changing with this series. The problem is The Force Awakens was filmed on 35mm, so the nighttime fight wouldn't have had the same problem as the ones in Kenobi (which used the Arri Alexa). That being said, The Last Jedi also used digital Alexa cameras, and managed to solve it for their nighttime lightsaber sequence by filming it in brighter light and grading it down (so the LED saber itself wasn't contributing the majority of the light in the scene), and changing the shade to emit a less saturated blue/cyan color that would be easier on the digital sensor: ![]() ![]() So it's possible they looked at what was going on in The Force Awakens vs The Last Jedi, decided "yeah, we want it to look like Episode 7" and went with the more saturated sabers without taking into account the difference in cameras and production techniques. Or maybe they did do camera tests, but decided the amount of chroma clipping was acceptable in order to achieve the look they wanted with the sabers as a light source, or assumed it could be fixed in post. There's a bunch of reasons why it might have ended up the way it did, but it's not like they're out here intentionally making bad shows - sometimes people run out of time to triple check things, or just make a mistake and don't realize until it's too lake.

I know this isn't exactly the right thread for it, but the only thing that Disney has in the works TV-wise from the Lucasfilm IP catalog that I'm looking forward to is the Willow TV show. That was a cool, goofy universe, and I'm glad that Warwick Davis is involved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGr9eD1Y4OQ
