I'm wondering if there's a twist coming that all the witches were actually good, but women with power = bad and the real antagonist has yet to be seen. That list Envy rattled off wasn't exactly a laundry list of evil, but she still referred to herself as doing evil things, so I don't think it was revisionist.

It actually looks more like they all committed evil acts, but in the name of good. For example, GluttonyWitch created monsters so people wouldn't starve, LustWitch apparently created beastmen, etc. Kind of willing to bet Echidna is selling herself short, too, especially considering that Roswaal seems to respect her quite a bit.

I'm kind of guessing there was a lot more to Satella killing them all, like maybe she did it specifically to get everyone to hate her and become a common enemy for the world.

I mean, we've seen 3 people who have witch factors besides the Greed Witch herself and they've all been terrible people.

I think the implication is that the actual witches are long dead, and the people currently using the Witch Factors are working for Satella.

Considering how Echidna was acting it seemed pretty clear that they didn't consider themselves nice.

From Echidna's description, the Witches mostly come off as pagan gods, capricious and destructive but still sometimes beneficial to humanity.

I think it's pretty clear they're taking a sympathetic turn with the witches judging by her tea party, and roswaal's opinion of the witch of greed.

I think we may find out that the witches are people but they've been mostly defined by the effects of the last surviving witch who tried to destroy the world and killed the rest.

The dragon was her neighbor and kept running his leafblower at night.

Shouldn't be fought "over a waterfall" but rather "drove past the waterfall" or in other words established a border of sorts.

It's been mistranslated here and previously in the anime (episode 6) and I know people are touchy about LN stuff so let's just say that The Great Waterfall is a specific location that features into the lore, and as a proper noun it ought to have been capitalized.

I've always appreciated how normal Subaru's backstory is. He was a good kid, if a little misguided as kids often are. He had good parents who cared about him. He just got a little too wrapped up in his own insecurities until he had put himself into a corner emotionally.

At the same time, even though it's all very normal and understated, it's very easy to see all the bits and pieces that make up his personality. It's really well done, IMO.

I guess Emilia auto-failed the test because, as an amnesiac, she doesn't have enough past to flash-back to.

Or Echidna's just a dick. Which seems likely considering that she's actively administering this test that's kept all these people trapped for however long.

(these spoiler tags are just from the most recent episode's content)

It's uncommon in this genre (and honestly "LNs/manga/anime with younger male protagonists" in general) for the protagonist to actually 1. have both parents and 2. have them not be faceless figures or working abroad or something, so I like how Subaru not only has parents but has parents with characterization who had a clear impact on who he is.

It's exceptionally depressing when you think about what the situation for his parents must be like now. Their life is basically ruined, especially since Subaru was an only child. Honestly probably the most depressing thing in this series up until this point.

Subaru's stress is also pretty understandable; it reminds me of my third semester in college when I skipped most of my classes. I'd get really stressed out in the time leading up to them, and once the time of them starting had passed I'd feel a sort of relief since the choice was now out of my hands.

Imagine an isekai where the protagonist has living characters from his backstory that are important to him and have had a clear formative impact, yet neither got imported into the new world nor is returning home to them the overarching objective of the story.

It's wild.

I wonder what the end will be. Will he have to choose between the new world and the old? Will he even try to go back? Or maybe he will find a way to keep in touch. Though considering everything "his parents will never know and think he is dead forever" might be what it sticks to.

That would make me sad...

God this episode is triggering anxiety... Subaru's panic attacks kill me. But also I'm jealous because 3 months of your high school life is nothing compared to the time I've wasted...

What a drat good episode. I feel like it's a lot easier to appreciate Subaru's quirks and personality now, not just because of how they relate to his parents but because, as he mentioned, he was always trying so hard in trying to outdo himself. I mean that's basically the entire show's thing.

I really enjoyed this episode but at the same time I find it amusing that the first phase of some mystical gauntlet everyone talks up as perilous is...remembering that your parents are cool and love you and that you're gonna be okay.

Story of my life, really. Had my parents been less strict, I don't doubt I would've gone down the same path of abandoning school and shutting myself off. It's a bit too real.
