I was shooting the poo poo with someone between photoshoots about the artist we were working for and they dropped this gem: "I don't know if I believe that he's actually ex-military. There's no way they'd let someone in if they were that weird, right? and i was just like buddy,

That's exactly it; one of the points where Catholics and most Protestants differ most severely is on the veneration of the saints. Non-Catholics consider it idolatry, though some denominations allow for veneration. Evangelicals in particular are really angry about that. I'm pretty sure there was a Chick tract about it.

Resurrections is a great riposte to the right wing, and also a good flip side to Dave Chappelle. Dave Chappelle stopped doing his TV show because frat bros were liking the lovely parts of his material and missing his points. But he came back a decade or so later and went full rear end in a top hat. Lana Wachowski is a trans lady who told a story about escaping a system of control and finding your true personal identity. But her trans allegory got hijacked as a metaphor by some reactionary assholes, and a studio said they were gonna make a movie with bullet time and explosions without her to get that built in audience. So she made a movie that doesn't take itself as seriously, where the fights are the least important part of the plot, that reminds people that things will change and bad guys will keep coming back to grab power, but we can fight the system and learn more about ourselves along the way. I think it was undercooked as a movie, but I enjoy it as a dashed off "this is what I really think, gently caress off sexists and nazis" message especially when the alternative was losing creative control.

NightGyr posted:Resurrections is a great riposte to the right wing, and also a good flip side to Dave Chappelle. If you don't see the system of control that Dave Chappelle critiques in his series of specials since his return...I have to ask. Are you a frat boy? I ask in jest. But coming for Chapelle as 'full rear end in a top hat' and then praising Lana Wachowski for speaking truth to power is infuriating. Dave Chappelle is speaking the truth of the black men's lived experience of a brutal system of control that persists to this day while mocking the fetishizing of blackness. He relates this to the lived experience of everyone America has brutally ground into the gears of Capitalism. He does this with skill and humor and a deep empathy of a close friend who can make jokes that are close to home but are too true to ignore. Misunderstanding his comedy as being anti trans or as being rear end in a top hat instead of the articulated deep humor about the double standards of being black in America, or trans in America is his Magnum opus joke. He knows, KNOWS, that he will be misunderstood as being anti trans, because people hearing him out has always been a problem. Because joining him on the ride of how truly lovely America is to it's poor, it's huddled, it's tired masses....it's depressing as gently caress and what depresses a lot of people daily. Frat Bros taking the easy mental off ramp of "haha n-word" doesn't invalidate Dave Chappelle as a story teller or an equally compelling champion of the possibility of a more just world. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk

I've never been part of a NORAD tracks santa event where the mission crew didn't shoot down Santa once the cameras stopped rolling. Someone always insisted on giving his track ID a 'festive red color' so I dunno what they expected to happen ![]() I started writing a response to the Dave Chaplelle thing but I don't think we're going to unearth any new ground on this one that hasn't been thought up during any other 'love-the-art-hate-the-artist' debate. I generally agree with flapjacks' general argument for reasons that don't matter now that I'm trying to type them out so in conclusion, human psychology is a land of contrasts. He's not wrong by pointing it out either. What he did say ends up denigrating a whole bunch of peoples' experiences, for no real reason. Best case, I think the idea that, "Unless we unfuck how our society treats black people, we won't go any farther for gay or trans black people.", is valid. That's not how he framed it though. Who's he though? One man, one person, with all of the prejudices a person learns in their life. Look, we all muddle through. You got an eye out. You care enough to ask. You care enough to admit you may be wrong. That's good, and I think well of you for it.

I think Chapelle is funny (or maybe was - I haven't watched his new stuff and I don't find transphobia particularly funny) but whenever I think back to the bits on his show that I liked the most it always seems like Charlie Murphy was the one that made me laugh the most.

If you graph charted Charlie and Eddie, Charlie indisputably became funnier than Eddie in S1 of Chappelle Show
