Real question: if you were about to spend 4 years on a US Navy boat what would want? I'm not gonna give up MOS, location, ship name, etc.

Some useful things: red-only flashlight if they do anything on the bridge (SWO, QM, BM). Navy issue flashlights suck and everybody buys a dual-color flashlight that proceeds to blind everyone as soon as they hand it to someone else. Edit: agree with the above on a good white light flashlight if they're an engineering rate as well these things piL fucked around with this message at 07:52 on Jan 2, 2023 |

Our racks were the same size as coffin racks on warships but I dont know if it's possible to keep your sheets "separate". I also liked having a short bathrobe with short sleeves for shower time. Got mine monogramed of course. A light material one wont take up much room and would be useful. Wait is he out of boot camp and A school yet? Sending him anything other than a letter while he's in boot is kinda dumb unless you really dont like him.

He has apparently done it all and gotten to a post on a ship in the Pacific.

Ask if he's got a CD player or something similar. Maybe a digital clock he can keep in his rack since it's possible he won't be able to have his cellphone on as an alarm clock. If you've got a local place that makes nice jerky, get some of that. It sounds strange, but jerky is drat good currency on ships. Hot sauces. Make certain that they're well packed so they don't break, but having your own little stash of hot sauce is really nice on a ship. Those are my rec's. If he's enlisted he won't have nearly the same amount of space as an officer, so small little gifts are nice. I agree on the socks. Try to get them in either all black, or at least with the calf portion black.

Not Navy, but holy hell flashlights. In addition to nice lights, the little photon/Inova Keychain type lights are fantastic to have around

I'll recommend the old-fashioned original without hesitation, it's got that particular flavor of aged beef. https://peopleschoicebeefjerky.com/

Boat Types- what about an e-reader/kindle type thing? Is that a decent idea?
|
# ? Jan 2, 2023 18:28 |

I still have my old kindle and it had whispernet which meant I could access lovely internet in a lovely format all over the world but that was before the Google phone. I use Kindle on my phone now but definitely worth it if they read. Current flashlight is a rechargeable Streamlight I found in the bilge.

When I go on underways I never fail to bring a microfiber full sized towel, fast drying towel makes a big difference.

Best advice I ever got was to get some cashmere socks for after work. Have to be nice to your feet if you're gonna sweat in boots for 8+ hours a day. I can wear whatever I want at this point though, nothing like answering an alarm in my safety flip flops and shorts, and have the chief come down wearing the same thing.

Serjeant Buzfuz posted:When I go on underways I never fail to bring a microfiber full sized towel, fast drying towel makes a big difference. One of the few pieces of "gear" I splurged on. Best purchase of my life. I had gotten sets with a giant beach towel, a smaller hand towel, and a washcloth. There was always a set in my ruck/A bag, the other would go into my B bag for deployments or long field missions. Years later, they are still great and head out with us when we go to the river or lake. They compress super small and weigh nothing. Plus they don't get funky quickly, which helps out bunches.

Get extra ribbed and lube to go with it.
