The TV show Space Force was pretty mediocre in a lot of ways but their idea of using digicam patterned after the lunar surface was an excellent idea.

I would non ironically buy a set of moon camo to take digs at select space force people.

IET is essentially basic and AIT and essentially all the training before you get to your unit. I think the term dates back to the 1970s.

I just want to point out that getting kicked out of korea is an utter non-event in terms of lasting consequences. No one is gonna care back home, there will be no follow-on punishments, and it's likely not even a career-limiting move if it happens below E-4. This kid managed to take a problem that would have been resolved as soon as the plane took off for one that will last for months, if not the rest of his life.

What does getting kicked out of both Koreas get you?

During the briefings we got in Area 1 before we got set up to Donducheon, I was unfortunate enough to run into a particularly loathsome moron from my basic, and after being told never to go near the DMZ, announces to people that he was definitely just going to sneak across the border and see what North Korea was like. I then asked him how, as a grown loving adult, he didn't know about the DMZ, and the mines, and the borders guards with itchy trigger fingers. To which he responds quite confidently that who care, it's not like it runs the entire length of the country.

So of course he made corporal in record time because he signed up for an extra year, and he could run real good. At which point he then proceeded to punch a Korean taxi driver in the back of the head while he was driving him around. Driver stops the car, and proceeded to kick the poo poo out of him, called the cops, who allegedly kicked the poo poo out of him some more. Then he got sent back home, and last I heard he deserted as opposed to just getting kicked out probably via admin sep.

My point being is that there were a LOT of dipshits just like him, who didn't even know what the DMZ was, so this guy being of similar decision making standard just really does not surprise me.

I sure do find it funny though.

You do have to wonder, if right as he stepped over the line and was grabbed by NK soldiers, if he experienced the same kind of regret as people who have jumped off bridges and survived.

The kind of thing where as you leap off, thinking that all your problems are now solved, but the immediately as you accelerate during your fall, you realize that the only real problem you have in your life, is that you just jumped off a loving bridge.

I'm not trying to be evasive but it was a gang rape and not real fun to talk about. There were around 5 trainees who were 'held back to answer questions' after graduation, this is the first time I'd heard anything further since social media didn't exist yet and I've never seen an article about it.

The navy should just use the YMCA swim levels for ranks: Tadpole, Guppy, Minnow, etc.

CNO could be Blue Whale.

N. Korea is 99.8% ethnically Korean, which I assume includes Japanese-Koreans, Russian-Koreans, and Chinese-Koreans. That seems to be roughly equal to S. Korea and Japan, as far as ethnic homogeneity goes. I dunno how far -Korean/-Japanese really stretches. Haven't heard good things about being mixed race in those places.

I'm surprised, on cursory examination, how many almost entirely homogeneous nations there are. Lesotho and Togo, sure. Albania and Poland, more surprising. There are a greater percentage of Poles in Iceland than non-"Polish" in Poland?

Well Iceland doesn't have that big of a population to start with, so you don't need many Poles to move that percentage compared to Poland.
At the same time, Poland has had a history of neighboring countries collapsing and having their citizens "encouraged" to move out of Poland.
