I don't think most Jews would use the term "goyboy". That sounds a lot like "soyboy", an alt-right/MRA term. "Goy" is not how I would call a non-Jew, it does have some pejorative connotations, despite originating from an archaic term for "people" (Abraham being promised that he will become "goy gadol", "a great people".) But maybe most American Jews treat it differently.

The Shomrim Patrol is not the same as the Shomrim Society which is the official NYPD fraternal organization for Jewish members, like the Holy Name society for the Catholics. Emerald Society has the best parade, Asian Jade throws the best dinner, Stueben Society has the best beer. Edit: spelling

The historian part of me cringed, but the museum volunteer/member/etc part of me thinks "eh, you gotta make money for upkeep somehow, and if this'll do it..." But yes, gently caress shipgirl crap. Also, as a resident of the city that built the Helldivers that helped sink the Yamato, Japan's continuing obsession with their giant all powerful ship-dick is never not bizarre/mildly amusing. Plastic_Gargoyle posted:The historian part of me cringed, but the museum volunteer/member/etc part of me thinks "eh, you gotta make money for upkeep somehow, and if this'll do it..." I mean Americans love Transformers which is just walking talking cars and stuff; the anthropomorphization of various objects into living beings is kinda just the logical extension of Shinto beliefs of ascribing a living divine spirit to objects and creatures; and western media has plenty of it's own examples of walking talking things or animals. As you've noticed there are benefits such as driving interest through tangential learning which might not otherwise have existed. I say, more power to it, because I think the concept fundamentally satirizes militerism; attempts to convey melancholic "tragedy and heroism" notwithstanding, as we've seen it fundamentally fails. Vincent Van Goatse posted:Yeah, that was it. I discovered it a few years ago because I'm a naval historian who occasionally needs to search for pictures of ships and those searches kept turning up weird anime poo poo and I made the mistake of not ignoring that fact. IIRC this can *only* happen if google knows you watch anime or play anime styled games.

Plastic_Gargoyle didn't say "gently caress fanservice in anime", in which case I'd be in total agreement with as fanservice isn't integral to the medium in any sense, but saying "gently caress shipgirls" because I dunno, "My precious history!" I'm not sure which criticism to take more seriously when it seems identical to that Japanese director's complaint of a lack of "tragedy and heroism" just with a different coat of paint.

The Pentagon is happy to use US Military assets, locations, and personnel in films that portray the military in a positive light. They have a strong preference for films that show actual personnel doing their actual jobs (mechanics in the background wrenching on planes, drivers, etc.) A big Hollywood movie just did some filming at an Air Force base stateside. One of the scenes called for a scene where climate refugees are storming an Air Force base to board evacuation planes. As part of this scene, they used actual security forces people. The instructions were that there would be a crowd of people rushing the runway, and they were to stop them. Everyone carrying a weapon was a trained stunt person, and they were supposed to tackle and restrain them at gunpoint. The rest of the crowd were extras, just people who lived on base who volunteered to be in the film. They were supposed to either let them pass OR let them turn around and flee. Security Forces dudes ended up just tackling and bodyslamming ANYONE who got close. The extras were pretty annoyed that they kept getting clobbered over several takes by these dumb airmen that can't follow directions.
