In Japanese, it was Paradise Left (楽園の左手), so... probably wasn't too difficult.

I like how even this silly chapter still has bits of worldbuilding that could change how we see the entire plot

So Donovan was credited for stopping a war? Is that propaganda, or does that claim have basis in reality? If it's true, what does that say about Twilight's mission.

Seeing how Twilight's whole mission is because W.I.S.E suspects he might be threatening the peace*, I'd guess probably propaganda. However, it could be both. Like, to go back to the whole story's Cold War roots, Stalin sided with the Allies in WW2 and so technically helped achieve peace, but he was obviously not a good guy.

*It'd be funny if at the very end, Twilight finally gets close to Donovan (assuming for now that Donovan can't read minds), only to find out that actually no, he's very invested in keeping the peace and was never a threat. The whole mission was for nothing.

Shocked I tell you
Well Donovan is the chairman and former Prime Minister of the Country's Far Right Party, that is openly pretty anti West. Donovan became Prime Minster during the War and after the War ended his party fell out of favor and has been the opposition since.

His party still has anti west views and Donovan himself is reclusive and mysterious.

I legitimately forgot that Yuri existed and was very confused for a minute.

I honestly didn't mind that chapter that much, Yuri being Yuri aside.

yeah, the chapter is mid, whatever, I just think yuri is a total boat anchor on the series

I think they’re starting to go somewhere with Yuri slowly coming to grips with his co-dependency on Yor, especially with the end of the chapter of him coming into his empty apartment and Yor coming home to her family.

The thing about Yuri is that for him to become a decent character he needs to abandon literally everything about himself.

Did I... did I miss anything important?
I will never like Yuri but I appreciate the point of the chapter at least. It’s a shame because he works well as a foil to build tension for Lloyd, give us the perspective of the local intelligence agency, and to learn more about Yor, but everything meant to be funny about him is just grating

Yuri needs Daybreak as a love interest.

I'm serious about this; giving him a secret gay crush would bring everything about him into the correct focus.

I find it a little weird that the Secret Police have got Twilight marked as this massive threat instead of the the assassin who has got a kill count probably north of 20

I know that it's probably a politically motivated thing, but you'd think there'd be a specific counter-intelligence operation to handle that sort of thing instead of the secret police

Was actually thinking of Nightfall instead. Her to get over her one-sided crush on Twilight and him over his weird creepo thing with his sister as well as give them some story beats about their jobs and relationships.

Not to try and read too much into the series with the funny future-seeing dog, but it's kinda weird that pretty much every dissident we've seen in Ostania is a wild-eyed crank or a dead-eyed terrorist.

I'm glad they don't cast the whole Ostania/Westalis conflict in fully black and white, but it's like they watnt o justify the supposed totalitarian, paranoid autocracy.

Yeah the closest we got was that one journalist and even he was doing sketchy poo poo with faking some of his stories. Other one was the bus hijackers daughter who was part of a peaceful college protest group.

I'm guessing that all of it is because of Yuri. Like, I wish he didn't exist but Endo clearly likes him and doesn't want him to be a straight up villain, so the secret police can't do anything blatantly evil while Yuri's working for them. So until Yuri quits or there's some twist where he goes full villain mode, the government can't be too bad either.

yeah it's sort of similar to how yor is only allowed to kill people if they are like, cackling cartoon villains and/or attacked her first, you can't have a nominally sympathetic guy torturing nice people in a stasi cell

Yeah I think even more than the sister stuff with Yuri is like. I guess it would bring down the mood if it actually talked about the secret police stuff, but this weird middle ground is almost more off-putting sometimes than if the series was extremely pro-secret police.

it'll be all well and good if he has an Are We The Baddies moment but for now I'm still going to hate the obnoxious siscon stasi shithead.

and this whisper of character development for him doesn't net his character or the space he takes up in the story(which already has too many things it can cover but chooses to include him constantly) any points. it was at least nice to have some good development for Yor.

The loudest least subtle people in the city draw unwanted attention to themselves? I can't imagine why the the paranoid blacksite toture room police officers would be able to notice them while they're out wearing a sandwich board screaming all day.

Trigger warning
If Yuri gets a girlfriend and stops being such a blind "I'm making the world safe for Yor" siscon, he may begin to realize the depth of his government's shitheaddery and either have a turnaround arc or knowingly let Twilight go in or near the series climax.

Whether that's redemption or not depends on your point of view.

So anyway what's Frankie up to?
