To me, it seems like she just...CANNOT bear to be in that house any longer than she has to be. Like, she loves her son but this marriage is truly, nightmarishly hosed and she's just trying her best not to let those feelings hit Damian, even if the ultimate result is emotional neglect.

I went back and checked the previous chapter in light of these new details, and the way she's thinks of Damian as a burden and wishes he'd died has lead me to two thoughts:
1. We know Damian has an older brother, right? Do we know that they have the same mother, or is it possible that she's Donovan's second wife?
2. Given the way she directs her hatred at Damian specifically I can't help but wonder his conception was non-consensual. Not that I expect the Jump editors to let any details on that matter make it to print.

interesting tidbit that his mother has her own residence, which lends credence to the theory that the marriage was arranged/political and she just hates Donovan

I tend to agree but I also wonder if they might be actually divorced but since Donovan's a political figure they can't have the news get out there so they let her have her own place to keep her quiet.

I'm not so sure about that since the hate only begins when Damian mentions his dad and the hate is intertwined with a lot of love and affections(hence my theory of some kind of mental health issue). I do wonder about Damian's older brother and have had that similar theory about her being Donovan's second wife.

I've thought about that as well and would fit the time period as well.

I do think it's interesting that the only time we're "seen" Damien's brother, he was just a disembodied voice on the phone. I like the second wife theory and I wonder is when we ever seen the brother, he'll look remarkably different from Damient and Melinda

I would say that's a good explanation for why she left after cooking Damien's breakfast, but I don't think it really explains her almost schizophrenic reaction to Damien when coming to pick him up after the hostage situation. I get the feeling that she loves Damien himself, but hates not just Donovan but that Donovan is a part of Damien and that Damien longs for his approval and not just hers. She can and does love Damien when she sees him as his own person, but as soon as she's reminded of the fact that he's not just her kid but Donovan's kid too, then her reaction turns because she can't stand anything to do with Donovan; not even by proxy in a child.

That aside, I do like that just like Becky that Damien has someone in the staff who seems to genuinely love him and want to look out for him even knowing how hosed up things are for him at home. I don't think that servant will turn out to be a secret badass like Becky's matron seems to be, but it's nice that he could see Damien was floundering and knew what to say to buoy his spirits.

Yup, turns out the wife is mean because she's upset about being treated terribly. Honestly, maybe they should get a divorce, seems like it could be the best outcome for both of them. Too bad a mutually healthy breakup can get you taken away by the secret police in the SpyXFamily world because being single is sus.

Does Talk no Jutsu count as therapy? If so then Naruto is probably the preeminent therapist in anime history.

In universe yes. As an audience, the real therapy would have been a two page panel of everyone lining up to punch Sasuke in the face like that one gag from Airplane.

The only proper manga about a mental health professional that I could find was Shrink, about a psychiatrist, which I've added to my to-read list. I tried to search MAL, but its search engine also gives results for partial matches, so "therapist" gave me... a lot of fetish manga. So I tried "therapy", which gave me... a lot of fetish manga :v:

If anime movies count, there's Paprika, where the title character is a (research) psychologist who moonlights as a "dream detective". The plot kinda starts coming apart at the seams by the end, but it's something.

In manga, I think Kabi Nagata's autobio works (My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, etc) include going to therapy (at least I remember it's included in her first or second book, haven't read the others), but I don't recall a therapist actually showing up, mostly she comments on what she experienced. It makes me feel like poo poo, it's great!

Handler is surprisingly competitive but we've still got that checkered past looming over her. Interesting that her cover is a single woman given the stigma associated with that early on in the series as well as how WISE has been losing female agents because of paranoia. Doubly so working at an embassy.

I mean, her cover identity is explicitly Westalian, so to some degree there's exemption from that very Ostanian stigma

It's also probably better for her cover if she's known as a very messy and very single woman. Hell, she might be intentionally learning into that stigma to bolster her cover. No doubt she's under surveillance and if she looks like a low-down disaster area who can't be trusted with anything serious it probably gives her a good amount of leeway and provides some inherent misdirection. And as for female agents being taken out those were covert agents going deep cover akin to what Twilight is doing. As BearDrivingTruck says she's publically known to be working for Westalis, but Ostania likely doesn't know in what capacity she's really working for them. It's certainly not bulletproof, but as long as Ostania thinks she's just a low level clerk flailing along day by day there's no real reason to go after her, they'll think she's unimportant in the grand scheme of things and definitely doesn't have any significant intel so she'd be a waste of time to interrogate.

Also Bond remains a good dog.

You and Omnicron make fair points. I figured being an actual person from Westalia living in Ostania wouldn't be the best cover since those are the first people I'd suspect of possibly snooping around given the cold war climate. I also had forgotten the chapter where we do see she is tailed on her day to day but she also keeps to a fixed schedule which causes her trackers to get lazy and gives her openings to sneak around. So it's not a perfect cover but it's stronger than I gave it credit for given she's been running it for a while it seems.

The fact that there's an embassy means Westalia and Ostania have actual diplomatic relations, so the secret police can't just go grabbing and interrogating Westalian diplomats, no matter how low-ranking they are. That means they have to have hard evidence of espionage before they can touch her. Which they're already trying their damnedest to get, of course. So really, nothing about her cover identity could possibly draw more attention than "Westalian working at the Westalian embassy." They already have every reason to suspect she's a spy, they just can't do anything without proof.
