Behold! a normal family dinner!

Well, that sure begs a whole bunch of analysis, doesn't it?

drat all these people are freaks

that is one of the most powerful manga chapters I have read in a LONG time jesus that was so well done. perfectly captured the atmosphere, awkwardness, separation, fear, and disconnectedness of them all. man I feel so bad for Damian.

Thinking that Desmond too can read minds, and he just read Damian's mind about what Anya told him at the dance.

What everyone else said. Man you could cut that tension with a knife.

I don't think there's any material in the world that could cut that tension.Electric Phantasm posted:Damian being happy his dad said anything vaguely positive to him at all is kinda heartbreaking. It would be cool. Kiss your wife Lloyd

You know it's good when you can FEEL how awkward the whole encounter is.

Genuinely great use of the art and minimal dialogue to sell just how awful this must've felt for everyone involved. What an awkward family meal.

Tree Goat posted:my dinner with anya "I think that Berlint is the new model for the new concentration camp, where the camp has been built by the inmates themselves, and the inmates are the guards, and they have this pride in this thing that they’ve built—they’ve built their own prison—and so they exist in a state of schizophrenia where they are both guards and prisoners. And as a result they no longer have—having been lobotomized—the capacity to leave the prison they’ve made or even to see it as a prison.” And then she went into her pocket, and she took out a peanut, and she said, “This is a peanut.” And she put it in my hand. And she said, “Escape before it’s too late.”

Getting the feeling Mr. Desmond runs his life on the idea that all words could be lies, and so non-verbal (and indeed psychic) communication is best. And this is the result for everyone else.

TheKingofSprings posted:Thinking that Desmond too can read minds, and he just read Damian's mind about what Anya told him at the dance. Yeah I admit I have never liked the "Desmond can read minds" theory but it would explain a lot of his behavior/mannerisms, and it would explain his "worthwhile" comment if he found out Anya's secret via Damian just now. That said the only 2 holes I can see would be 1.) that Anya can generally only read pretty surface-level thoughts, though I suppose you could explain that away by saying Donovan's just better at it since he's an adult and a weirdo, and 2.) He met Loid face-to-face and Loid is still active and hasn't been like disappeared or exposed or anything.

That sudden glance at what appears to be one of the butlers, or what appears to be a revelation he got. It's pretty worrying, whatever that was. But, otherwise, just your normal family dinner.

After all that silly, fanciful, fantasy, unbelievable dinners you regularly encounter in fiction, someone finally captured what an actually normal dinner, with an actually normal family looks like. Bravo.

The only way to make a more awkward family dinner would have been for someone to bring up politics.

Has Loid ever acknowledged the existence of Garden in this story? You'd think his intel would be on top of a group of basically superhuman assassins. Has he mentioned hearing anything about Ostania developing a secret psychic program? As it stands, he's usually the smartest and most competent man in the room, but his family are all basically demigods hiding just under surface-level and it's a fantastic part of the narrative. He could solve all of his problems by just getting to know his wife, daughter, and dog, but his determination to keep them all at arm's length in order to be a perfect spy is probably the biggest obstacle to his own mission. He's the perfect spy, but Anya and Yor and even Bond have saved his rear end on more than one occasion and he's never been able to recognize that. If the theories about Desmond having mind powers are true (And I think there's a better-than-not chance they are), Loid's going to have a rude awakening about how exactly this game is really played. This series rules.

He knows Garden exists, discussing it with Franky just before the cruise arc, though Franky has better intel on them. Psychic powers, no - he knows of the project that enhanced Bond's intellect, but doesn't know it gave him precognition. narm00 fucked around with this message at 20:18 on Oct 13, 2024 |

Man Man Damian looking at his mother for any kinda of assistance and her just looking away like that hurts

Man Damian, give up on your family and just hang out with Anya more. Just like Loid planned

donovan has autism and genuinely enjoyed being able to have dinner with his whole family it was silent because he doesn't do well with small talk (because autism) his wife is bipolar his elder son(s) are also neurodivergent damian isn't old enough to understand mental illness yet and yeah donovan can probably also read minds

So Demetrius takes after his dad whereas Damian is more like his mom... only without whatever is going on up in her noggin...

Some observations that may mean nothing other than continuing the atmosphere. Donovan doesn't begin eating until the rest of the table has begun. Melinda doesn't eat anything. Demetrius only makes responses. Damian and Demetrius do not sit directly opposite each other - Damian is slightly closer to their mother while Demetrius is slightly closer to their father, but there's a gap on either side anyway. Donovan looks from Demetrius, to Damien, to Melinda, holding his stare until his eyes narrow (that latter two reacted to his stare). He waits for the rest of the room to leave to talk to Damian. His eyes are narrowed again as he leaves, with an implication that what he found "worthwhile" was not, in fact, what Jeeves stated. If we assume some level of esper power at play, it also occurs, from Anya's earlier PoVs that Demetrius has what could be termed a perfect mental defense, and Melinda's thoughts, while less absolutely impenetrable, are also constantly in flux between extremes...which would seemingly at least muddy the waters against intrusion. Damian doesn't have anything that could be described as an outright guard.
