My working theory is that Donovan is not an alien, but he is psychic; however, his powers aren't mind reading like Anya, but mind manipulation. And he's used these powers on Melinda in the past, which has caused her to think he's an alien. Thematically, this would make him a good foil for Anya, and it would also explain why Melinda sometimes seems to have schizophrenic trains of thought; her mind has literally been damaged by implanted commands that go against her natural instincts.

I wonder if we getting mirror characters to highlight the family dynamics (crafty partner, a ditzy spouse, and a gifted child) or Melinda truly believes her husband has a truly sinister intent for how she should treat her son(s). It's either of those, or this romance spy action comedy also wants to include ALIENS!

I can believe that whatever the gently caress is going on with Donovan's brain (which may or may not be the fault of self-inflicted surgery) has made his thought processes so strange and inscrutable that he no longer registers to other people as human. He's an anti-Anya whose psychic experiments have distanced himself from his own species rather than bringing him closer to it. Like, his wife is using the language of superstition to describe something very real and terrifying.
