Like you can certainly start out as a "maker" by hacking around with plywood and a jigsaw, but once you get to the point that people look at your work and go "wow that's really nice" you have graduated to calling yourself a carpenter. the real grift is that the self checkout system and the payment processor are different platforms so after you pay 50 million dollars for the scanner/inventory control and a percentage of your sales to the processor you need to spend another 50 mil in consulting to build a custom solution to get them to talk to each other [poorly]

target had the opportunity to front to back rebuild their whole payment and customer accounts system a few years back, I’d guess that was part of it. many stores it feels like the systems are literally fighting with each other
