To me, calling yourself a carpenter or machinist implies that you know what you're doing and/or are getting paid to do it.

Like you can certainly start out as a "maker" by hacking around with plywood and a jigsaw, but once you get to the point that people look at your work and go "wow that's really nice" you have graduated to calling yourself a carpenter.

no, it is also about knowing procedures and methods. your first instinct on how to make something will often be dumb for reasons that become obvious once you both see how someone else did it and then you try it the dumb way on your own

Expertise is having a broad and deep enough understanding of the system you're working with that you can avoid doing the dumbfuck poo poo that newbies do, and diagnose/address the problems said newbies create.

In my case it's because the carpenters and machinists know what they're doing.

No that's the hobbyist/maker. The pros will know several ways to about accomplishing the same thing, and decide on which depending on trade-offs of each method. IME anyway.

walking optimally is something i think a lot about because i am a huge rear end dork

in college my four roommates and i pretty much bought the same thing every week, so on sunday after x-files finished up we would pile into my ford escort, drive to the kroger on howell mill, and everyone would walk their usual routes and grab what we needed. i drove the cart on a set route so the aisle walkers could dump into it a couple of times, and five minutes later we'd be at the cashier's with $300 of groceries. after we loaded the trunk mcclain would suplex the cart into the parking lot corral and we'd go back to the dorm. good times.

glad that project worked out and wasnt just 18 billion dollars of grift from companies like zebra/motorola who i used to work for and watched them grift so hard on self checkout scanners

qirex
Feb 15, 2001

the real grift is that the self checkout system and the payment processor are different platforms so after you pay 50 million dollars for the scanner/inventory control and a percentage of your sales to the processor you need to spend another 50 mil in consulting to build a custom solution to get them to talk to each other [poorly]

target had the opportunity to front to back rebuild their whole payment and customer accounts system a few years back, Iíd guess that was part of it. many stores it feels like the systems are literally fighting with each other
