Sir, I ask of you, are you aware of Elias

he is what is known as a "golden god" and perhaps even the next "gretzky"

I stats nerded his first season pretty hard and enjoyed the one game I saw of him live against the Jets.

I will probably go to more real life games this year.

I was a bit disappointed that The Hockey Guy was defending Grapes, especially in that really mealy-mouthed way of excusing his behaviour because of his age and the whole "if you don't like it don't watch it" argument. He normally has pretty good and fair takes on things but I've noticed he does have a bit of a blind spot with certain parts of hockey culture (see his response to the Auston Matthews thing over the summer).

I haven't seen anyone mention that Don spent most of the playoffs opening his brief segment by showing hockey players walking into arenas and then commenting on how much better they look than basketball players for some reason.

Dude loving love dogs so much I'm surprised that he didn't pass out from whistling at them on air.

Almost everyone I've mentioned this to has said some variation of "Good" or "Was going to happen eventually.". So far it's just been my dad half-heartedly trying on an argument that Cherry wasn't saying specific bad racist words and quickly backing down.

Cherry should have been gone two decades ago at a bare minimum, but it's actually remarkable how little defense he's getting. It's dumb that institutional momentum kept him there but the pretty uniform messaging that he should be gone is slightly over the very extremely low bar that I expect in these situations.

We should be holding people to much higher standards though. This is just slightly less awful than I figured.

That's the interesting thing: but people are by and large slowly realizing that you don't have to use specific words to be racist. Hopefully this continues but I'm not holding my breath.

Not that it matters too much in this thread but did Don have a valid point with regards to wearing Poppies? I'm not sure he fully understands why he was fired & he might think it's over that rather than him believing immigrants don’t wear them on 11/11.

He knows drat well. The network 100 percent told him to apologise on air and why and he refused, forcing them to finally can his rear end. He just doesn't care because he's a racist.

Even if there was, how do you prove that more/less/the right number of people are wearing poppies anyway? You can't, so anybody getting agitated about it is just being a jackass to prove how "patriotic" they are.

I wouldn’t call it a troll considering it’s the Sun. They were making bullshit up because they are the Sun and figured he’d make a good quote to support their bullshit. They were legit hoping Cherry would help their case.

This is my guess but he likely assumed anyone who wasn’t wearing one wasn’t Canadian (or in the Commonwealth) and therefore should be ashamed of themselves for not conforming to his idea of social norms. He sounded like his brain was trying to pick out a group of people that wouldn’t have one on their person and came up with the broad stroke of immigrants.

More non-white people in his country must mean there are less patriots

It’s really ironic that white dudes from countries (USA and Canada) that haven’t seen a domestic war in 200 years LOVE to preach patriotism and the sacrifices of war to immigrants who many have lived through actual warfare in their home countries.

The biggest sacrifice Don Cherry ever made was sacrificing good hockey in Canada by villainizing the worlds best players for decades
