I think the colorist messed up, and Cheryl is supposed to be pointing in the third panel (there's a wood-colored finger shape in the wall).
That combined with Rusty's pose makes me see this:

The way the blog mentions Michael saving his childhood sweetheart from a car crash and covering it in a newspaper without sounding mad makes me curious as to when exactly did people found out that Lynn straight-washed her son in the comic and how the car crash was actually a real event.

I've always kind of like Zippy mainly for its connection to underground comics. I know it's not a favorite and it is pretentious at times, but I didn't expect some crotchety and well-trodden gag about people nowadays and their phones! Zippy should probably limit the non-sequitors to snack cakes and less about sanctimonious jabs at the normies with all the polluting and cellphone gazing they do.

Jesus loving christ, Holbrook! :psyboom:

Shapeshifters in fiction usually have some rules to them, like how they can't transform into a functioning complex machinery, or how they can't exceed the capabilities of the thing they're copying. Holbrook just broke both of those rules, and just removed any possible tension to be had with stories involving these stupid dodos.

I think Holbrook is less concerned about building dramatic tension with his plots and more about, "Wow! That would be cool!" He has way different ideas about what is cool than most people do, but I really do think it's all about wish fulfillment.

I talk poo poo about Luann mostly because it is a bad comic and I don't like it. But with regards to Bets, I'll say this. She was portrayed as being a little too into her social media accounts since she started helping Gunther sell Tiff's stuff. But her big fault most of this time was posting pics and videos without telling Gunther first (and it's worth noting that the words "Please ask me before you post pics of me or stream our conversations or makeout sessions or whatever. I want to know ahead of time" have never exited the boy's mouth. He has never told her that poo poo bugs him). It's a huge leap to go from that to referring to friends as "fans," especially since she has always thusfar been shown to grasp the concept of human friendship. She's gung-ho about social media, not a psychopath. Next thing you know she's going to be SO INTO social media fame that she's going to die in a blizzard while chasing a yeti.

If it's an unguided thrown rock, there are basically three things that can happen.

If you're ridiculously unlucky (or if it was deliberately aimed, and your spacecraft doesn't get out of the way), it could hit your spacecraft on the way up.

If it was launched at less than Martian escape velocity, it comes back down to Mars after less than one orbit and smacks back into the planet. If you're insanely unlucky and your crew is incompetent, it could hit your spacecraft on the way back down.

If it was launched at greater than Martian escape velocity, and it misses on the way up, you essentially don't have to worry about it again.

If your spacecraft can avoid it in either case, you don't need to leave Martian Orbit (and waste fuel on a suboptimal departure window) to do so.

This whole thing is just so loving stupid. Holbrook's trying to go for a "[X] character deals with bigotry" thing, when said "character" is just one feature of a word processor/text messaging. Trying to make people's annoyance with the auto-correct feature into some bigotry story just doesn't work.

FrumpleOrz posted:

I thought this was going to be a pregnancy thing, but now I'm not so sure. Because if this were a pregnancy arc, then Holbrook would drag it out for months and give it lots of focus.

I believe the conceit is that, without Calvin's imagination, the pictures are all identical or close to identical. It isn't so much that they think Calvin is dumb or wasteful. He just genuinely doesn't understand. But it seems like a sarcastic remark would be more in character.
