Speaking of Bloom County, is the modern revival Breathed started on Facebook (or wherever it was) a while back still going? And if so, is it any good?

Breathed hasn't posted a new strip since *checks* January 4, but says on FB that he's just taking a break.

And no, I didn't find it particularly good. It was more of the same Outland / Opus stuff -- the occasional decent gag but nowhere near the quality of Bloom County at its peak. Breathed had trouble sticking to a consistent schedule even when the strip was running, which didn't help.

Some more information here about Dogs for Defense:
https://americanhistory.si.edu/blog/dogs-defense

This dog I recognize!

quote:

Dogs for Defense was a very successful program, recruiting approximately 20,000 dogs for the war effort. Monetary contributions had, by December 1944, reached such an amount that the program was able to meet its present and future needs. The most famous graduate of the Dogs for Defense program? A Husky/German Shepherd/Collie mix named Chips. Chips was best known for attacking a nest of Italian gunners, which forced the soldiers to surrender. He was also known as the dog that bit General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Chips survived the war and came home to his family in Pleasantville, New York.

And a comic.

You think Linda ever bothered cleaning the blood off the helmet? Also let's not forget how only three people know that Bull killed himself because his wife pretty much covered it up to get the insurance money. Buck, the only one who ever bothered spending time with Bull in the last few months, was never told about it.

I just realized we never settled that forums contest about Buck's thought process when he died because we never got any kind of explanation for why he was wearing his helmet.

Was there a medical reason for that cesarean delivery in chickweed? I assume she wasn't just too posh to push.

She's pretty casual about messing with her staples though, maybe they can somehow trivially afford the medical bills on their classical arts income. Have they ever shown any care about money at all? For anything?

Something I love in Cul De Sac's school setting is how the kids are precocious without being terrible, and how Miss Bliss never gets mad at the kids or looks miserable with her job. It's a far cry from the likes of Frazz with the kid who always bothers the teacher with his nonsensical questions.

So the kid whose [X] trait is "always on a trapeze somehow" has a kid with the mermaid. Every day I find out something new about this comic, and every day I hate it just a little bit more.

Hagar giving his kid advice is very wholesome. :3:

I honestly don't think we got an explanation on why they even needed a cesarean. Brooke doesn't know poo poo about how pregnancies work so I wouldn't be surprised if he thought you always need a cesarean when giving birth to twins. And Brooke is too busy drawing them loving to make them worry about things like money or anything.

To be fair he can do whatever he wants these days. He seems to mostly draw the strip for fun and isn't making any money off it (besides any eventual physical collection).

Also, I do agree that the newer strips aren't quite up to snuff but i did like the ark where the Basselope bit off Donald Trump Jr.s nose.

We were told that it was a complicated high-risk pregnancy -- there was something about the fetuses sharing an amniotic sac, I think. And Edda was sent to a perinatologist, not just an obstetrician. And then she spent the past several weeks on bed rest. There's a certain amount of detail beyond which it's not really fair to expect Brooke to go in a daily comic strip.

Honestly, for all the many, many faults in strips like 9CL and Luann, sometimes we're a little overharsh on them.

In December of last year (which I only read last month, so it's fresher in my memory), there was a Luann in which Luann and... big stubbly guy who she's kind of dating, the one who also likes dogs? Is his name Jock? Anyway. Luann and Big Stubbly Guy found themselves tending to Shannon, and they brought her to the mall, and someone asked if they were her parents, and they expressed dismay at the idea of that.

And people in this thread were upset that Luann and BSG seemed to loathe Shannon so much. Couldn't it have equally been that they were dismayed at passersby thinking they were old enough to be the parents of a child that age?

Is it too late to get a tag as well?

Re: Edda's birth plan, I assumed it was related to whatever unnamed complication kept her on hospital bed-rest. The bed-rest where she spent her time drawing cheesecake pictures of herself and making out with her gay ex-roommate.

Don't forget all the sweet money she made as a model, which cause her to be fired from her ballerina job. I don't think the strip has ever broached the fallout of that.

These are actually pretty nice realistic ways to help out a friend with a new baby coming, every new parent I know is super grateful whenever they can get an hour break even though they do of course love their new kid immensely. "Sanity savers" is kind of a goofy way of putting it but having even just an hour of space while your kid is taken care of by someone you trust is a huge boon to new parents. She could even cash it in a bunch at once and go out on a date! I think it's a rad gift.

Ditto covering meals for somebody going through something demanding and intense and time-consuming is a classic neighbor move-- I grew up in the burbs and definitely remembering neighbors coming over with lasagnas, pies, casseroles, etc., generally good left-overs food, whenever there was a death in the family or a long-term illness.

Even now if I have a friend who has lost a pet, had a new baby, is ill, etc., I usually find it a nice gesture to get them a pizza delivered or run over a plate of cookies or something.

Yeah, the unrealistic thing is sort of Elle having so many friends when we never really see her doing stuff for people outside her family, today's strip is nice in isolation.
