I want to hope that Mary Worth handles a story of getting unwanted advances like this in a graceful manner, but I can't help but wonder if it'll get swept under the rug again. I still remember how nothing came out of the story with Dawn and Hugo where Hugo spent much of the time negging Dawn, or how Wilbur's disastrous date was blamed on him having a drinking problem rather than Wilbur being Wilbur.

Nemi has changed a lot over time, probably to some extent mirroring the life of her author. She hardly ever sets things on fire any more. And I'm sure to some extent international syndication makes it harder to be edgy. The later strips I've seen have way less sex and nudity - though again that might be partly because Nemi's in a steady relationship these days.

How Wonderful! posted:I tried to explain Kevin & Kell to my wife today and eventually just gave up and said it was Beastars for perverts and 90 year olds. I'll give it a go. Holbrook decided to make a comic with a milquetoast, Aaron Sorken, truth is in the middle sensibility. Except half the characters are predators and half is pray and murder is legal but self defense is not. Holbrook inadvertently created a comic that critiques his world view but he either didn't realize that or he didn't care so long as people kept paying him to draw boobs on animals.

I'd describe it as something trying to be cuter Zootopia, except it says classism and corporations are Cool and Good, actually. Also the author keeps slipping in their fetishes despite the art looking like a kid's comic book.

Holbrook keeps writing himself into a corner, attempting to explain things and create a consistent universe, and in so doing writing himself into a corner *even more*.

Beastars is pretty good and I'd normally say pretty wild and unusual but there's nothing in it that prolonged Holbrook exposure hasn't prepared any of you for. It definitely does on purpose a lot of exploration that Holbrook does by mistake, which often turns out to be very interesting.

"On Cloud Nine" is an old expression for being extremely happy. There is a popular media trope that Heaven is a bunch of fluffy clouds, and people turn into angels with wings and a halo when they go there. Thus, a combination of these tropes with the (probably unrelated) phrase is fairly natural. This is where this particular comic is mining for humor - the recently deceased didn't get to the good cloud (cloud 9), only reaching the "OK" cloud (Cloud 5). So he turns into an "OK" angel with cardboard wings and a pipe-cleaner halo instead of a "good" angel with real wings and a real shiny halo.

The leak-proof fountain pen wasn't even invented until 1908, and ballpoints (first marketed in 1938) didn't displace dip and fountain pens until the 1960s when the price of ballpoints dropped. Truly amazing how recently something as simple as a pen has reached the modern incarnation.

That's the exact thing I thought when headband lady showed up for the first time and every time since. Actually back then it was more like I genuinely couldn't tell which it was supposed to be. Though if any nuclear family strip would include a muslim side character without drawing attention to it I honestly think it would be Tinkersons. Imagine what a shitshow Fort Knox or One Big Happy would make of that idea. Actually Family Circus might, too. My Lovely Horse fucked around with this message at 09:16 on Mar 23, 2020 |
