Or really any merchandise at all, can you imagine how much bank Waterson would have made selling Hobbes dolls back in the day?

I sent a letter to Watterson when I was a kid; it was basically a page-long screed about "WHY ISN'T THERE MERCHANDISE? I'D SCREAM, I'D BEG, I'D KILL MY MOM AND DAD FOR THAT MERCH"

I got a form letter in response...with an enclosed print of a Spaceman Spiff Sunday strip, printed in full color on heavy paper stock. I don't think I tossed that, I should dig through my stuff at my parents' to find it.

I don't think either of those questions are out of line or stupid, since you'd rather have the author explain the full detail of their life their own words. It's pretty clear Batiuk just wrote two versions of the same strip and sent both to press.

As a Fingerborg moment, In Swedish 'gift' means either poison or marry (English 'gift' comes from the latter, a Germanic word meaning to give the bride to the husband). It's really hard for me to tell which one the airplane banner is proposing to Anna.

There's nothing like comics kingdom etc for Norwegian/Scandinavian comics. They're usually just hosted by the newspaper that carries them, and only for a few days worth of backlog.

Some might run in physical comics and etc, but outside of maybe getting anthologies and scanning those there aren't really any good options.

If it wasn't for Corona and the renovation of Kulturhuset in Stockholm we'd have "Serieteket" Stockholms Comic library. I considered swinging by a few months ago to see if I could find something cool to show the thread. But also they have some book available for loan as E-books, including three whole Zelda collections https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1017455 , https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1017874 https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1086098 . Sadly I can't check their quality since I've either forgot my password or been thrown out of the system for inactivity, but maybe I'll brave the Corona wasteland to reactivate it.

I AM NOT BEING PAID TO CORRECT OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS! DONKEY!!

Here's something - a comic strip that was so successful it spawned a new idiom.

Keeping Up with the Joneses, by Arthur "Pop" Momand, published from 1913 to 1938.

I found an abysmally-scanned compilation on archive.org. Here's the first of the readable examples.

Some more digging revealed a much better-scanned version, so I'll be posting all the strips.

edit: thumps Attach File functionality a few times
