I loving love Holbrooke because he has a vague understanding of things that are bad and generally generally seems in favor of that bad stuff being bad but also puts absolutely zero thought into anything he does. It's amazing. Like I genuinely believe he knows and believes CA to be bad, and that it would be weird for his fox character to go as a rabbit for this scenario, but he wants the trio to go out and about so he writes it in and does it in the most clunky dumb way possible and sees no issues with any of those OR HOW these rabbit hormones alone have been used as: -trans metaphor -cultural appropriation metaphor -not a metaphor at all! Just a literal thing that is happening that has no additional meaning. 0 thought put into how he uses any part of his setting for anything and how it might cause other parts of the comic to fall apart i read all his comics with bated breath waiting to see what absolute insane "please i beg you think about this for even one more second" nonsense he throws out next. Safe Havens brought out the mermaids and its been nonstop "gently caress racists" done in the most hamhanded poorly thought out manners possible alongside general Ha Ha, Mermaids Are Real Now! jokes

Or like let's look at his most "grounded" comic, On the Fast Track. People here have routinely brought up how Deathany rolls over for her boss and yadda yadda yadda and that stems to me as something Holbrook didn't intend but just happens because he didn't think about hwo any of the behavior comes across. He routinely points out how the boss is lovely, overly demanding, steps into all their lives constantly (multiple strips have had the joke of Deathany enjoying coming home only to be pulled in by her boss and the gag is usually a bad pun as she puts on a : ( face) but also no one really leaves (except the security guard?) and Deathany is also shown as doing her job with a smile & trying to reign Trells in and loving it as much as she hates it because it just depends on what Holbrook decides the "gag" should be without thinking how any of it could actually be read as. Everyone in Safe Havens rolls their eyes & sighs at how Fastrack is still around and funding this mission and putting in various capitalist tendencies all the way through but also everyone still goes with it and and she continues to be doing these things because Holbrook just wants bad boss jokes with a dash yof greedy corporation jokes. It's a unique flavor of bad to me, amplified by the fact Holbrook has been doing 3 strips every day (except sundays with Safe Havens) for like 40 years

Ah yes, because that's how you want to be immortalized in the newspapers: "The Pissman". Luann isn't even giving a good reason why she wants to get married so soon. She just sees it as a requirement for her FOREVER bullshit. And I know Team Evans thinks Luann saying "Your Mr. Forev- Oh, I mean MISS Forever" is a joke, but Luann is such a lovely friend that I can totally buy that she forgets that Pru's a lesbian. Those people came to your house to help you give birth/get your husband home safely/get you to the hospital. Maybe try to sound a little grateful that they were there for you and your family, Lynn.

Mark Trail storylines often read like a dream or stream of consciousness, where we just bip from one action to another with no flow permeating or pushing anything, no consequences, things get brought up and we just move on by like looking out the window of a bus.

Johnny Walker posted:Mark Trail Just the thing for a backpacking expedition: a bulky, heavy, single-use item that potentially makes a maddening little "ding" with every step you take (but not loud enough to function as a bear bell). Great planning. This is certainly a kid who's familiar with outdoorsmanship. The other possibility, depending on your reading of "Hey! My alarm clock!", is that he didn't know it was in his bag. Which is somehow even worse.

So Rusty's great idea of telling Mark is to set up an alarm that will wake the others up? But that only makes them realize they're gone, that doesn't really tell Mark where they're going to go or which direction they're headed. Jams can't even set up a basic storytelling beat. Johnny Walker posted:
Considering how Dawn told Wilbur about how Hugo planned to visit her while never showing interest in visiting Hugo herself, I have to wonder how intentional her liking Jared because he's conveniently nearby is. sweeperbravo posted:Mark Trail storylines often read like a dream or stream of consciousness, where we just bip from one action to another with no flow permeating or pushing anything, no consequences, things get brought up and we just move on by like looking out the window of a bus. The thing that trips me is that Jams' slapdash storytelling is making Rusty into a terrible enabler. Any decent writer would've had Rusty comfort the kid, or tell him people do want him and invite him to sleep in his tent instead. You know, do anything to stop a little kid from stomping off into a forest alone without any goddamn adult supervision.
