![]() So for those of you who don't grab comics from Go Comics, the site doesn't just let you go straight to today's comic.* Instead, it shows you a cropped thumbnail of the middle of whatever the comic is and you click through to today's. I knew as soon as I saw that middle panel in the thumbnail without reading the text that Luann was about to say something lovely and Bernice-y. (And I was completely unsurprised that Pru took it as a compliment. I'm well aware, BTW, that this sort of statement absolutely CAN be a compliment; I've done it myself. But the difference is you have to say it with a laugh and a smile, not a look of heavy-lidded disapproval.) *Or maybe it does and I haven't found the magic url. Whatever.

rannum posted:Or like let's look at his most "grounded" comic, On the Fast Track. People here have routinely brought up how Deathany rolls over for her boss and yadda yadda yadda and that stems to me as something Holbrook didn't intend but just happens because he didn't think about hwo any of the behavior comes across. He routinely points out how the boss is lovely, overly demanding, steps into all their lives constantly (multiple strips have had the joke of Deathany enjoying coming home only to be pulled in by her boss and the gag is usually a bad pun as she puts on a : ( face) but also no one really leaves (except the security guard?) and Deathany is also shown as doing her job with a smile & trying to reign Trells in and loving it as much as she hates it because it just depends on what Holbrook decides the "gag" should be without thinking how any of it could actually be read as. Speaking of an unique flavor. Sometimes the punchline of a comic elicts a response, sometimes it falls flat. Generally the number of flats goes up as a strip ages and zombifies, but somehow, Holbrook just keeps trucking, 40 years and counting. I can't call his comics good in the usual sense, but I appreciate them. Reading this thread they are a daily bucket of cold water to my face. A pain that reminds me that I'm alive. The man has engineered the polar opposite of a punchline. Terrible instead of delightful, but just as potent. Even now, without fail, reading the final panel of a Holbrook strip makes me groan and regret that I did that. Every single one of them That's amazing consistency for a daily strip.

Holbrook seems forced. I find most of his punchlines tedious, obvious or just plain absent. Not something that would generate a meaningful response, an "Ugh" at most. It's like an algorithm writing comic strips, but a competent one rather than the entertainingly-under-trained markov chain of a Boyce comic. Nothing but a few thousand awful webcomics feeding into a bland "science-fantasy melodrama but boring because it's somehow less dramatic than family circle" mess.

Another one of the recurring themes of Keeping Up with the Joneses is that the McGinises were gullible rubes who would accept anything if they were told it was fancy and expensive. I'm not sure if the spelling "mut" was a contemporary alternate of the modern "mutt", or if Momand was just sloppy. The name "Ethelbert McGinis" was recycled by the 1942 movie "Mr. Wise Guy".
