As for whether Reagan knew what was going on or not, well...

Most of Reagan's National Security Counsel was indicted and convicted for perjury, obstruction of justice, and evidence tampering, but Bush 41 pardoned everyone involved.

And you thought the Russia Investigation was a mess!

Yeah, it's an endless and appalling rabbit-hole. I'd be curious to see how other comics with some degree of topicality (like Bloom County or Doonesbury) treated it at the time, since in DtWoF it mostly lingers in the background.

Certainly helps contextualize Mo's constant anger!*

* As in, the problem is never that she's 'too angry' at things, but that she doesn't know how to turn it off.

I just want to take an aside to complain about the paucity of English onomatopoeia. The "yum"s in this one are stand-ins for ホクホク, which describes the thing being eaten as soft, flaky, crumbly and fresh but also doubles to describe someone as being pleased with themselves in a happy manner.

As far as pop culture goes it's a pretty appalling dearth which fits with the equally horrifying laggardness the news media covered it with at the time. It gets my blood boiling when anyone talks about Bush I being an honorable respectable president when he literally abused pardon powers to cover up crimes he was involved in, something that Trump has only ever discussed doing hypothetically.

Classic Luan

Some Guy TT
Aug 30, 2011

I remember ages ago someone making the comment that what messed Luann up is that even though the characters have gotten older over time their characterization hasn't actually changed. The result being that jokes which seem perfectly fine in the context of middle school girls come off as egregiously immature when placed in the mouths of college students and young adults. Classic Luann is doing a really good job of driving that point home I think.

amigolupus

Classic Luann seems like it's trying to ape Peppermint Patty and Marcie, except really badly. Luann has been pretty whiny so far.

And knowing how she acts in the current strips, Bernice's complete indifference except to ask Luann excitedly if she can have her skates and stereo paints their interactions here in a completely different light.

It says a lot that you can copy/paste what they're saying here into the current strips and it wouldn't feel out of place at all.

The last couple of Zelda strips have really highlighted something to me, which I think explains yet another reason why I dislike the Zelda/Cesar relationship so much. It’s probably because Nova and her brother have been present.

"Speedvau-bar". Again, literal translation, no idea. Maybe "speedway", when characters speak english it's usually written in a way that emphasizes pronunciation, I decided to leave it as is.

Minibike, or mopo in finnish, was motorized transportation du jour for a finnish teen back in the day (since you won't get driver's license until 18). Common still back in the 90s, kids these days seem to opt for scooters or proper light motorcycles. Think Suzuki PV or Honda Monkey.

On the one hand, yes

On the other hand, of all the not-amazing artists in this thread, Bettwy is most likely to knuckle down and actually keep dad's hair like this for a bit and show it growing out bit by bit, week by week
Idk why, he's super lazy about a lot of details, but this strikes me as the kind of thing he'd randomly want to depict realistically
