Dykes to Watch Out For (1987)![]() I think Zelda chat makes me feel a bit reflective of this strip, where all of our main characters, who we're used to seeing in a well-off bohemian urban center, come across as real assholes when put out of that environment. I think Bechdel is really good at showing that her characters, especially Mo, can be narrow-minded, petty, or judgmental without making reading about them into a chore. The line about being astonished to find meat in a bowl of chili cracks me up because I know so many people (and past versions of myself) that could have said it with a straight face. Anyway-- Hojo's is a nickname for Howard Johnson's, not, as I initially assumed in a sleep-deprivation haze, a grotesque FFVII-themed chain. But no-- Howard Johnson's was a restaurant/hotel chain that was once extremely widespread and successful and cultivated a kind of home-style, anodyne, Middle-American air. By 87 it was in decline, most of its restaurants having been converted to Bob's Big Boys (a chain I remember fondly from when I was really young). Definitely the kind of joint Bechdel's characters would believably turn their noses up at. Heritage USA is a little more interesting and horrifying. It was an Evangelical water-park/resort in South Carolina owned by the infamous televangelists Tammy and Jim Bakker, two of the sleaziest figures in a tremendously sleazy milieu. While Heritage USA was for awhile the third most successful theme park in the US, it tail-spinned in the late 80s as Jim Bakker's was entangled in financial scandals and rape charges, then it was acquired by Jerry Falwell of all people, and THEN in 1989 a hurricane finally came along and hosed it up. It closed later that year. So we can presume that Mo and co. weren't spending a lot of time hanging out there. One thing that's interesting about this particular strip is the interplay between the fairly consistent motif of Mo getting frustrated at getting misgendered for her short hair and androgynous build, and the gang's snap judgment of the gay cowboys. I think in this case Bechdel definitely knew what she was doing, but I want to keep instances of this tension in mind when we get to some of the trans stuff that hasn't aged super well.

I actually rather enjoy Zelda, please keep posting it. It does sadden me to realize the DtWoF author is so anti-trans. IIRC there's a young character that comes in later, a MTF preteen. Her mom hooks up with Lois in the end, or at least where I stopped reading at. I more remember Toni and Clarice breaking up, and Toni meeting another woman, and both of them freaking out over what her son, and the other woman's daughter, would think about them getting together so fast. Cue panel of the kids snarking at each other as to who would move in with who, because whatever kid had to move into the new house would get guest rights and be spoiled so much more.

I haven't read the more recent strips but from what I understand second-hand it's not that Bechdel is a dyed-in-the-wool tooth-gnashing TERF so much as that she started from very antiquated notions about trans identity and was slow to catch up, which like, I'm sympathetic to because that's the journey of most cis queer theorists I read and admire from before a certain date. If it ever gets really really bad in the strip I'll consider dropping it or skipping stuff but for right now I like DtWoF enough and find it a rich enough artifact of a particular moment in queer culture that I'm planning on sticking with it as long as possible.

Oh she caught up? Well, that's a drat sight better than a lot of other folk. I'd honestly actually be interested in seeing that journey. Anyways, onto today's Corto Maltese: Enver Pasha gives his last order, or this is less impressive with only one person, I must confess, or The Armenian Revolutionary Army are not paying for their own ammunition ![]() ![]() ![]()

Samovar posted:Oh she caught up? Well, that's a drat sight better than a lot of other folk. I'd honestly actually be interested in seeing that journey. From what I remember through the mid-late 90s its not always handled super elegantly but is in general approached from benign naivety. She puts a number of second-wave-era transphobic talking points in Mo's mouth but usually just in order to deflate them. There's a 1995 strip for example that got some circulation in which Mo is anxious about using a bathroom at the same time as a trans acquaintance, Jillian, but when some teen gives Mo poo poo about her androgynous look Jillian has her back and Mo feels embarrassed about being judgmental: ![]() It's not subtle and it's pretty didactic but it's pleasant enough. Ditto the Jonas subplot is pretty awkwardly handled but in general I think Bechdel's intention is to ultimately celebrate the character's transition. I think one of the issues here is that it's usually Mo who is the mouthpiece for transphobia in these strips, the "main character" of the comic and the one closest physically to Bechdel's own self-portraits, and so it's hard for some readers without a grasp on the dynamics of the comic to separate her views from Bechdel's. But these strips are also very consistently precisely about Mo getting dunked on for being a small-minded jerk.

I thoroughly enjoy posting these, I also grew up on Bloom County (to the point I have an Opus plushie) thanks to my mom. It's interesting how many people in here like/liked Bloom County as I know no one in real life (other than my mom, duh) that read it.

Her mom hooks up with Lois in the end, or at least where I stopped reading at. If you were reading them in this thread that actually was pretty much the exact place the strip stopped. I had a much more reliable source for the later years but Bechdel had also pretty much stopped updating in a regular manner by that point so plotlines would blaze by way, way faster than they did in the earlier years. Which is, admittedly, better than the alternative.

B Kliban - I recently subbed to /r/FuckImOld and it's funny to see people nostalgic for things I hated as a youth. Someone recently was nostalgic for steel soda cans. I remember the pull tabs being everywhere including hidden in the lawn grass ready to slash your feet open. I also remember the kitchen have needle-nose pliers because every once in a while the pull tab ring would break before you got your soda open and you either got it out with the pliers or had to punch holes in it with a triangular can opener and drink out of a glass like a loser.![]()
