I only rememembered it because it's such an odd saying it's been stuck in my head like a sliver ever since. So strange to see it on Scary-go-round. Makes me wonder if it's a more common saying or if Alllison was listening to DJ Shadow. The album it's from came out in 1996.

Here, buddy, I'll help you out.

She has to see him in person because she's still trying to decide which boyfriend to keep. She can't be honest about that because you might dump her and she wants to keep both boyfriends on the table until her final decision. Besides, if she were honest even for a moment there's a chance people might figure out that she isn't a completely blameless victim of circumstance in this affair, just a boring cheater, and she can't have that.

I should note that in the novel, Mrs. Fothergill is referred to as a "hermaphrodite." While I like the books, they do occasionally have bits that remind you very strongly that O'Donnell was born in 1920. Honestly, Giordano's interpretation of her isn't quite as ghastly as it could have been...

It's Sauli Pylvänäinen, he's way too enthusiastic about the local athletics club. Notice that Leevi Pikkula speaks three times and is reserved each time. Sauli is quiet in one panel that he's in, Leevi is quiet in five.

This reflects the scientific fact that 90% of Finns do 10% of all talking and 10% of Finns do 90% of all talking.

I only have excellent ideas
Dykes to Watch Out For (1987)

I might be wrong on this but as far as I know the "lesberada" as a popular concept in 80s lesbian activism comes from Gloria E. Anzaldúa, the icon of queer theory and Chicana studies. She uses it to refer to a stridently campy and defiant dwelling in liminal sexual and racial spaces, but I also found, poking around, a somewhat earlier usage of the term "lesberada" as an activist group in Houston in the late 70s:
(from pointblank times, vol. 3 no. 6)
they also had a bitchin' t-shirt

They're pretty involved in regional activism throughout 78 and 79 and even made in-roads into organizing a national organization of lesbian activist groups, and were given a warm shout-out in The Advocate in May 1979 as well but by August they seem to have been defunct.

I can't find out whether or not "lesberada witches" were a real thing or just Bechdel having fun. I would be super surprised if she was referring to the Houston desperadas and only a little surprised if she was making an Anzaldua reference, so I would be completely unfazed to learn of a different group of "desperadas" in the 80s. It definitely does sound like a very 2020 thing though (and indeed you can buy a kind of tacky knockoff of the original lesberada shirt on certain dumb queer news aggregate sites if you really must insist).

Kiss-ins were a popular and widespread form of civil disobedience of the period too. I can't find specific attestation of any happening during the 1987 March on Washington but that certainly doesn't mean they didn't happen. This was, of course, a period where mainstream representations of gay characters, let alone gay kissing or sex, was exceedingly rare (the first kiss between two women on national broadcast TV in the US wasn't until 1991 and the first kiss between two men during primetime didn't happen until 2000). This was an especially pointed act in the midst of the AIDS crisis, in which intimate touch between queer people was seen as actively dangerous.

Grimey Drawer
I grew up in the 80's/90's and was only vaguely aware of gay people, like Elton John. Melissa Etheridge surprised me far more: keep in mind I was a sheltered kid, my dad was horribly old-fashioned ("you'll learn to drive after you learn to iron!" I was about 10 when I started ironing his clothes) and I had had no idea that women could like women. My education of the sexes in terms of relationships mostly came from my parents' unhappy marriage, and trashy romance novels that always had a stubborn headstrong woman who 'learned her place' because of a man, who was usually a rogue of some kind but had a good heart. So my theory always went that eventually all women would become 'real women' once they were taught by said rogue. No, there was never any discussion about this in my house, why?

it was on PopUp Video where I found out this cool looking lady with the guitar was a lesbian. And about the time Ellen came out, I was still unsure, but at least in Ellen's case, my idiot kid mind figured: well, she probably tried to find a man, but look at her! Melissa, by comparison, had a haunting voice and loving awesome hair and looked amazing and....well this is an odd feeling I'm having, I will stop watching PopUp Video.

Yeah, it took me a long rear end loving time to realize I was a lesbian, why do you ask?

Fun Mo fact: for all her unease about the trans community, she gets mistaken for a boy a loving lot, especially when the bookstore she works at has Harry Potter days; customers get irritated "Harry" doesn't have his scar.
