Me too, when I lived alone right after college it was steamed broccoli over brown rice with tofu and soy sauce every single night for dinner and vegetable quesadillas every single lunch, dumb expensive oats every breakfast, no snacks, tons of wine, really depressing stuff. I love love love cooking when I've got other people to feed though.
I getcha, but on the plus side, that's already leaps and bounds above what's seen as the usual (just after) college cuisine.

At my worst, dinner was a bottle of Sprite, cause it's got calories just the same as a meal.

When I want to relax, I read an essay by Engels. When I want something more serious, I read Corto Maltese.

The only critique I have of DtWoF (and this is rich, coming from the quality of my scans, I know) is that I sometimes find the comics a bit small? Otherwise, they - and the added commentary - are fantastic.

And from added commentary that is fantastic to its atonym - in today's Corto Maltese: The fog is a metaphor, or the local inspector needs to start limiting his coffee intake, or Harry du Bois would consider this police department decidedly un-Disco.

Is this any better?

to compare:

Right now I'm just grabbing my images from the edition of the Essential I have on Comixology. I've started buying up used copies of the old print editions, which may be easier to just scan and post larger, but the world being what it is right now I'm not really expecting to see them show up any time in the immediate future.

Vastly. At that size it's no longer necessary to zoom in a few steps to see what's going on.

I'd never even thought about using browser zoom features to look at smaller images. I mean there's no reason I can't, just seems like a lot of effort. Suffice to say yes the bigger images are much better. I've been skipping maybe half of these when I'm not in the mood for squinting but the bigger one really jumps out.

The book tells us that usually people woke up at 4, ate dinner at 11 and went to bed at 9.
I'm not entirely sure, why that was worth telling. I guess Topelius just wanted to include some historical details he had learned.

It's interesting to compare how DtWOF and Mary Worth handles cheating, especially since it treats the topic seriously. Ginger and Clarice are presented to be in the wrong, and even their friends know this is a bad idea and are trying to talk them out of it. Toni's body language in the last panel says she's deeply uncomfortable and vulnerable being back with her family, so Bechdel wants to remind us who will get hurt the most by this. It's quite refreshing, especially after weeks of Mary Worth more or less telling us that Dawn's actions were the right move because she would've been miserable staying with Hugo.

I definitely didn't expect this ending. :smith:

Internet/graphic novel artist Steenz is taking over Mark Tatuli's Heart of the City. I'm pretty excited about this, since Heart of the City kinda sucks and Steenz is pretty committed to doing her own thing with Tatuli's blessing. Plus, it's also nice to see fresh faces on the comics page, and as that WaPo article points out, almost none of the newspaper comic regulars are black women.

Steenz did a big Twitter thread breaking down her new character designs, and I like them a lot:

https://twitter.com/oheysteenz/status/1252647951442345986
The problem with Tatuli's comics has always been that they're boring and repetitive, but I did like the art style. This style... I do not. It looks... Bland? Generic? I don't know. But hopefully she'll make up for it with the writing.

Much. I'd also like to add that your commentaries are great. Basically the only reason I'm even bothering to read DtWOF since I just hate Mo so much. :argh:

I always browse SA at 150% zoom. The text in some comics is still too small for me to bother with.

It wouldn't annoy me so much except that speaking as someone who actually read the book I'm dead serious when I say that like a fifth of the text is dedicated to this utterly bizarre experimental vaginal reconstruction surgery subplot. I would think that a preteen girl might find that part to be just a wee bit more interesting than gangster cliches.

I am frustrated that these boys completely missed that Eminem is trailer trash, the kind of poor white boy who lived the same hardship black folks in the ghetto suffered. It's not quite the same without the institutional racism, but it's about as close as you can get while being white.

I think it's a love to hate thing at best, kind of a register of where these characters have gone in their lives and how far they've drifted from their original characterizations, just like the little recurring bit about everyone gradually dropping vegetarianism except Mo. As far as foils go I kind of like the College Republican kid who shows up eventually better.
Cynthia is a more sympathetic character, especially once her backstory comes out, but I was just reading what I have of the back half of the series and Sydney noticeably sparks up the comic. She's a ***** but she makes the strip lively, like a good villain does. Cynthia always feels like part of a B story (because she is).
