You have probably noticed how many characters are addressed with their titles, like "director Teuvo Isopaljo". I hope it comes across correctly in English as formal and stilted as it's supposed to be. For example johtaja in Finnish can mean pretty much any kind of leadership position, but the word has a different feel to it than it's literal English translation "leader". I felt that "director" was better for the kind of absolute authority Isopaljo as a CEO has.

On that note, we meet mayor Martti Mielonen and I finally decided to use "mayor" as his title. This is incorrect, Finland doesn't really have mayors (while the position is legally possible), instead generally opting for kunnanjohtaja for which "commissioner" would probably be more accurate. Again, I decided for "mayor" because I felt it reflects Mielonen's independence even though as a kunnanjohtaja he was elected by, and subservient to, the county council.

Many characters also refer to each other as "brother", this is a particular clique of local powerful people who belong to the same hobby groups and social club. More of this in later strips.

tl;dr - translating is hard

Thank you for all your hard work. Isopaljo is a shitbag.

But really you can use just about anything to spice something up as long as it doesn't become dominant. I love cinnamon buns but if you left out sugar and butter no one would eat them because cinnamon tastes like poo poo by itself.

I only have excellent ideas
I'm really impressed at how Zelda landed the end of the Cesar thing and I'm double impressed with Alhazred's translation of the poem. Translating rhyming verse is hard as poo poo.

The Arlo and Janis today also feels really honest and bittersweet. My own mom is really informed and cautious about covid otherwise but still really wants me and my wife to come visit. I think all the prudence in the world risks flying out the window when you really just want to be with your family and I feel really heartbroken every time I have to re-explain to her why we can't come.

Anyway here's Dykes to Watch Out For #45 (1988)

-Mo is singing "A Groovy Kind of Love," presumably the 1988 Phil Collins cover from the soundtrack to Buster a movie I've never heard of until right now. Kind of a left field choice!

-"Gringo" by Nena Fae Greene is, I think, a joke about the writer Rita Mae Brown's 1988 novel Ringo. Brown was a major figure in the Black Arts Movement and garnered a lot of accolades for her first novel, Ruby Fruit Jungle, although she later pivoted hard to mystery novels where the cat's the detective.

-I have a female Macho Trollops and Macho Strumpets are a reference to something but it's over my head. Same with Pigs & Geese. If anybody can help out with either of these it'd be much appreciated. Throughout this period of the strip a lot of the bookstore scenes are a vehicle for Bechdel to take jabs at the increasing commodification that went hand in hand with higher queer visibility, which kind of blurs into the more downbeat Amazon subplot much later.

Also, curtadams has come through again and sent me scans of DtWOF #s 38 and 39 so I'll put those up later!

I've read both Rubyfruit Jungle(which I recommend) and one of her later-but-before-the-cat-era books, Venus Envy(which I recommend only because it becomes bizarre as gently caress partway through).

Sam's Strip (2/1/1962)

1962 felt a little late for this kind of joke since Chubby Checker's cover of "The Twist" came out in 1960. However it turns out it also charted at number one for two weeks in January 1962, for reasons unknown to me. I also found out that there were a poo poo ton of knock-off twist songs that same year, including "Twist, Twist, Senora," "Twistin' Postman," and "Bristol Twistin' Annie," the more famous Isley Brothers version of "Twist and Shout" and the admirably to-the-point "Hey, Let's Twist." Shows what I know.
My favorite version of The Twist, a legitimate hit single for 1988:

Quoting Julet Esqu again because they've put into words what's happening in this storyline:

Julet Esqu posted:

Yeah, she's doing a lot of those mental gymnastics that cheaters do to convince herself and everyone else that she is not at fault, the affair just happened without any encouragement from her, she was just living her blameless life in a virtuous way and then the sun got in her eyes and just tripped onto that dude's dick, but actually she's just an ordinary everyday cheater and this is your typical run-of-the-mill affair. Acting like she needs to meet Hugo in person to decide which of her two cocurrent boyfriends is her destiny is just further attempting to remove blame from herself. And when Hugo arrives and announces that he, too, has been cheating the moral justification will be complete and she will not only have fully absolved herself of all guilt, but will be able to tell herself that her affair was a good thing that she didunexpectedly happened to her for all the right reasons.

I was planning an extended visit to my mother in late March and cancelled it in January once the first R0 estimates came out. Now I'm really pissed that all the Southeastern states are "opening up" because I was expecting a window to come visit in the summer and that's now unlikely.

"A Groovy Kind of Love" was a big hit in the 80's. I didn't even realize it was from a movie, which is because the movie was a massive flop.

Macho Trollops and Macho Strumpets are references to the book Macho Sluts by then-lesbian Pat Califa (now a trans man) who was a pro-S&M writer back when the anti-pornography movement was more, erm, dominant in lesbian culture. Califa had a column in the gay leather magazine Drummer and was an editor in the gay bondage porn periodical Bound and Gagged so I think you can guess what kind of reception came from the anti-porn activists.

Dykes to Watch Out For #38 & #39 (1988)

Unless I've really missed something this is the first I've heard about Mo and Clarice being a former item.

-Lois is reading Empress of Doom. This doesn't appear to be a real novel, and if it's a parody I don't know what it's a parody of.

This is entirely not my forte so sorry if I'm reductive but extruded polystyrene foam was patented in 1945 by Dow Chemical, which holds the actual trademark on Styrofoam (which apparently is officially always light blue?). It's considered not eco friendly for a few reasons-- primarily the two things Mo mentions, emissions involved in manufacturing it, and its extremely non-biodegradable nature.

Styrofoam was a tentpole issue for environmentalists in the 80s, largely I think because it was visible. The hole in the ozone could be difficult to explain to laypeople, just like the effects of global warming and difficult to convey the urgency of to skeptics today, but litter and waste is immediate and eye-catching. Berkeley banned styrofoam food containers in 1987 and Suffolk Count, NY followed suit in 1988. Since then it's been a bit of a push and pull with some states and counties passing more or less strong laws but I'm in Philly and I'm pretty sure the Mexican takeout I had for dinner last night was in styrofoam containers. It's something I remember being very acutely concerned with when I was in elementary school but that time and ennui kind of made me blase about.

Either way I think Mo looks pretty cool with her helmet in the last panel. If anybody is in the market for a new av I think it would look pretty slick.
