How successful was Lisa's Story (the book) in the Winkerverse?

It's really hard to say. He goes on book tours (that he bitches throughout), and people keep trying to make movies about the book (which he bitches about throughout), so you'd think that was a sign that he was successful. But he still teaches at a public school and you can't say it's for the love of education because he never stops bitching about that either.

That's the thing, they want to make a movie about it, but then say there's no way it'll sell.

Actually, does anyone besides Jar want to make this movie? He seems to be the only one actually hyped for it.

This is the second time Les has gone to Hollywood to make this movie. The first time it went into production with a real studio and actors and everything, but Les got all mad that they wanted to destroy his story by making it interesting or watchable, so he killed the whole project and went home with his money.

No wonder nobody in Hollywood wants to work with him this time except one Oscar-hungry actor

It's important to point out that the first time they tried to make Lisa's Story into a movie, Let sabotaged it because the script was deviating from the Holy Tome.

I only have excellent ideas
Dykes to Watch Out For #53 (1989)

I don't know if Lois' earring is supposed to be anything in particular. As a kid I was aware of the right-earring thing with gay men, a method of flagging that seems to have more basis in urban legend than reality, although who knows, and in any case to my knowledge it was never even anecdotally a lesbian thing.

I guess this and the establishing shot in this one are as good an excuse as any to talk about a real bit of lesbian semiotics that has been pretty prevalent all along-- Madwimmin's logo, a stylized labrys. The labrys was a kind of ritual or ceremonial double-headed axe in ancient Greece-- in Crete in particular it was central to the Bronze Age Minoan religion and was associated with powerful goddesses and priestesses. In the 1970s, as feminists continued to seek to reclaim matriarchal practices bulldozes, perhaps, by centuries of patriarchal power (spearheaded by people like Robin Morgan, Silvia Federici and new academic programs like Sarah Lawrence's MA in Women's History) the labrys came to be a popular symbol of feminine solidarity and self-sufficiency, particularly among lesbians. "Madwimmin" itself is a combination of two currents in radical feminism in the 80s:

1) "wimmin" was an alternative spelling of "women" that, like the "womyn" adopted by the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, aims to dehisce the semantic value of "women" from that of "men." "Wimmin" specifically has roots with pagan and wiccan movements of the 1970s. "Womyn" and "wimmin" are also sometimes associated with "women-born-women" policies, which are unfortunately a priori exclusionary to trans women.

2) The Madwoman in the Attic was a very popular 1979 study by the literary critics Susan Gubar and Sandra Gilbert, and refers to the neglected and imprisoned "madwoman" Bertha, Rochester's first wife, in Jane Eyre-- it was an influential effort to study canonical works of literature from a feminist perspective, focusing on texts by Victorian and Victorian-adjacent woman authors.

There's some powerful old person energy in Prince Valiant, between Sligon's "when he said he wanted peace he was sincere - so sincere in fact he leaves his wife and daughter behind" and King Arthur's "'Let us hasten our plans that we may find the comparative peace of the battlefield!' (for he, too, is a married man)."

This might have been talked about, but at what point did they decide to give The Phantom the slightly less gay purple colour-scheme? They've made him way more bluish like in most of Europe.

Weird homophobia aside, the Phantom was originally grey but printing grey in coloured comics was a problem so different publishers chose different colours and eventually it was standardised to purple in some places, blue in others, and, I believe red in at least one country.

Funky Winkerbean - Feb 23 - March 4th, 2007. All of these ran in sequence. There's a few days of army stuff before where i start that kind of foreshadows it but it's funnier without the context.
