Evil Mastermind posted:Bull's CTE story was, what, a week? Two? Regardless, it didn't get the same long-term examination of anything. It's confirmed he has CTE, he commits suicide, we see the funeral in one Sunday strip, The End. Batiuk bragged to The New York Times that he's making a 10-week storyline about Bull's CTE, but it was just five weeks instead. And two of those five weeks was spent following Les around, because of course what he feels is the most important thing in that godforsaken story. Christ, we get it already, you loving hate your kids. And I don't know if putting a baby down and letting them cry for a while is a good solution or not, but it feels terrible coming from Lynn "throw my child out onto the snow" Johnston.

I want to post an addendum about something I was puzzled about : A few months ago, when the issue of Bechdel's attitudes towards trans stuff came up, I posted a strip I'd found around online, dated to 1995, about Mo going into a bathroom with a trans woman and having a little learning moment. I have access to all the strips from 1995-1996 now and was surprised to find that this strip wasn't in it; the character of Jillian is mentioned a few times but doesn't show up. Bechdel of course was a pretty prolific cartoonist outside of DtWOF but from what I've seen most of her one-off stuff doesn't directly involve the DtWOF cast (I could be wrong, as we'll see in like, one sentence). Well in the end it was an extremely easy mystery to solve. It turns out that Bechdel drew the strip in question specifically for Leslie Feinberg's 1996 Transgender Warriors, a pretty influential book in trans studies, one which, I have to admit, I never cracked open until today. Feinberg's classic memoir Stone Butch Blues was first published by Firebrand in 1993, and in fact Bechdel blurbed it. I'm a little embarrassed that I never knew any of this, and kind of agog that a lot of the cross-talk about Bechdel's history wrt trans stuff skips over it too. Anyway here's a cleaner scan of the strip from Transgender Warriors: ![]() How Wonderful! fucked around with this message at 23:11 on May 12, 2020 |

Of course, knowing what we know now about her parenting makes this look a lot worse in hindsight. *assuming the baby is fed, dry, and not injured in any way. CIO is still a thing today, but I'm going off my mom's memories of being a new parent in the 80's and how this method was recommended. edit: ah gently caress, as the FOOB lj community pointed out, the crib is in Elizabeth's room so guess who really gets to deal with the nonstop crying! Majinaughey![]() Bogor 1976 ![]() ![]() The "Miss Bartlett" referred to here was a former nun turned founder of moral watchdog group Society for Promotion of Community Standards. At this time in the 70s it had around 25,000 members who campaigned against pornography (boobs in movies), homosexuality, abortion, and sex education. British readers might recognise in her the common soul of Mary Whitehouse, who twice visited New Zealand on Bartlett's invitation. The year after this comic she was granted an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to the community and would later get the New Zealand Film Commission to put in a clause forcing them to "consider public decency" when licensing films. If you're curious about the 'former nun' part, she reportedly left the nunnery because they asked her to tone it down with the anti-pornography letters to censors and the media.
