Lauri "Late" Ylä-Mämmilä is a veteran of the Continuation War. The song he sings is Ateenalaisten Laulu ("Song of the Athenians"), by Jean Sibelius from a poem by Viktor Rydberg. It is a honorary march of Finland's National Defense University.

Yeah, unsurprisingly a lot of Finnish men had PTSD from their war experiences, but couldn't really talk about it to anyone. Finnish men were (and to a degree still are) raised to bury their emotions, be strong and carry on regardless. Showing emotion or talking about it was a sign of weakness and got you ostracized by your peers. Obviously that doesn't work for deep personal traumas, so you got a whole generation of people who tried to drink the pain away.

And then they raised the next generation the exact same way.

Also, goddamn old Brenda Starr is wild. I remember reading it growing up because it was in the funny pages and I don't recall Brenda ever getting kidnapped and taken to a subterranean realm. Of course, I also couldn't tell you any storylines from Brenda Starr.

I hear it as someone trying to enunciate during a conversation on a phone with unbelievably bad service.

edit: it would make more sense if the kid had a speech impediment or was just learning how to talk, but the sentence structure & vocabulary is all correct, just spelled over-phonetically for some reason.

It was always a mystery to me if Calvin was just being a poo poo or if his mom was maybe actually a bad cook. I like that, and dislike how every family strip always has its Mom prepare these dogwhistly "designated bad foodstuffs" meals like eggplant tofu casserole.

How Not to Compose a Comic Strip.

- The panel break is completely unnecessary and only adds confusion. It makes us think at first that that's Amos's hand, a few seconds later.
- So I guess the hand belongs to one of the characters that's actually a supernatural space demon or whatever? Or perhaps God Himself? Who knows?
- Note that the Holy Glow will not appear at all in a newspaper that prints weekday strips in black and white, leaving no clue to the above.
- Is the hand writing the word with a pen, or peeling off an adhesive letter? The hand's position would seem to indicate the latter. But in either case... what's actually being said here? Is God labeling this section, perhaps to call Amos's attention to it? Is He removing a label He finds inaccurate for the books in question (of which we have no information)? Who, what, why?
- It goes without saying that Amos will not mention or react to this apparition in any way in subsequent strips.
