Zanzibar Ham posted:I think I somehow didn't realize that the mermaid kept in contact with some university and became a professor or something of Mermaid Studies... while in space?? She got offered a job in a university because she's the face of the news that DNA Wizard released to the public. The university doesn't even know that she studied in a Mermaid University, so she's pretty much being hired as the token mermaid teacher. Zanzibar Ham posted:There's an Holbrookian amount of mermaids on Earth, can't they hire any of them? Naw, all the other mermaids are too busy using Mermaid-Grindr, because DNA Wizard's plan to erase mermaid-racism is to tell humans that it's totally possible to gently caress mermaids.

Dykes to Watch Out #71 (1989)![]() ![]() Reading Curtadams' posts have helped me figure out a number of Bechdel's formal tricks, and have been really illuminating in general, so I felt proud to recognize a strategy he points out quite a bit-- the best punchline here imo is Sparrow and the bit about Harriet having an affair with her therapist, with a bunch of extra character stuff and plot sandwiched in between there and the after-dinner punchline in the final panel. The Ten Percent Tribune is a paper that shows up here and there throughout the strip and is, as far as I can tell, fictional. Later on Mo will begin to write book reviews for it-- I think it's meant to be specifically a queer-issues weekly, along the lines of LA's Ten Percent which published its first issue in 1979. The 10 Percent thing was pretty widespread and popped up here and there as kind of coded way of indicating in-group affinity as well as a way of signaling, I suppose, numerical solidarity. "10 Percent Is Not Enough-- Recruit! Recruit! Recruit!" was a popular chant among lesbian protesters and activists, playing off the broad received wisdom that about 10% of people were queer in some way, although numbers among millennials and Gen Z'ers suggest that this number was a serious low-ball!

How Wonderful! posted:Dykes to Watch Out #71 (1989) It is interesting that Bechdel was trying - and often succeeding at - a number of innovative techniques, including emotional expression though physical means without dialogue or narration, non-terminal punchlines, the dramedy combination, and more nuanced personalities, even pretty early in her career. She was very ambitious artistically. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because she had a lot of training in literature and literary criticism (judging by Fun Home). She often disparages her college learning in autobiographical work, but she actually seems to have learned a lot in college. curtadams fucked around with this message at 19:20 on Jun 7, 2020 |

One fewer Junk Drawer than usual this week since there is nothing up for Wednesday. I don't know why. Is it normal in The US to smother your kid with a blanket while breast feeding it in your own home? Like I get that you can't get away with showing part of a titty in a comic like this but there are ways to draw it without it being visible.

Bear in mind FOOB was originally drawn 30 years ago, and in Canada. My breastfeeding friends are much more open about it in their homes or even in, like, apartment building public spaces.
