curtadams posted:

It is interesting that Bechdel was trying - and often succeeding at - a number of innovative techniques, including emotional expression though physical means without dialogue or narration, non-terminal punchlines, the dramedy combination, and more nuanced personalities, even pretty early in her career. She was very ambitious artistically. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because she had a lot of training in literature and literary criticism (judging by Fun Home). She often disparages her college learning in autobiographical work, but she actually seems to have learned a lot in college.

Yeah judging by the literary references she uses throughout DtWOF-- especially some of the pretty small-press journals and stuff-- she was pretty tuned into queer literary culture and, especially germane to this, a fair bit of nontraditional if not totally experimental fiction and memoir. For all that she kind of gently minimizes DtWOF as something she began when her literary career was D.O.A. I do believe she treated it from pretty early on as a serious literary and intellectual endeavor, and I do also think that the segue from DtWOF to Fun Home was in part her realizing that the one-page strip was becoming more of a hindrance than a help for some of her ambitious formal ideas.

There's an interview somewhere where she talks about the decision to move from one-off gag strips to the serialized Mo saga in response to encountering Howard Cruse's Wendel, which as I remember it is really good and well-drawn and funny but not really as sophisticated as DtWOF per se (although I'd put Stuck Rubber Baby easily on par with Fun Home). Still, I think that in part she saw Wendel as a challenge to do more with the page and these first few years of the strip are her kind of flexing her muscles at the form in a way.

Thought it was kind of neat to see how we're getting into the storyline the film version of Ella Cinders used as its basis. In the film, Ella wants to enter the contest mentioned here and snags a book from the sister about how to get into motion pictures. She practices the looks in the book and it's a pretty funny scene. I think Colleen Moore does a pretty good job as Ella.

Just look at them.

That’s, uh, eleven gang members, of which, maybe four are described with jobs useful for being in a criminal gang? Two of them are just outright named as snitches whose only job is to report on the gang to the cops?

This seems... poorly thought out.

(on an unrelated note, I really like Millholland’s Popeye strips and I hope he’s actually getting to take it over. He deserves success.)

That pillow between them annoys me. Why is there a caret? You already inserted the text in the correct position - except not centred for some reason. I get that it's supposed to indicate that "stay at" has been added after the rest was done, but it's just unnecessary. The fact that it's written smaller to fit the remaining space would make that clear anyway.

I thought this was funny when it seemed like the Queen was just deliberately trying to set off Conan's masculine vanity to make him forfeit the deal so I was disappointed at the final panel which makes it look like she was actually expecting him to go along with it.

That's how it started, but around the time she started thinking about how much she hates the Annual Date Merchants' Festival she realised she'd accidentally argued herself into being in favour of the whole thing. We've all done it, that's how everyone ends up with a Velvet Elvis that's too big to actually display.

I was thinking the same thing. I have an eight month old and wouldn't want to leave them with their grandparents yet, never mind a teenager. Wouldn't be able to enjoy a restaurant even if I did cause I would be worrying about them too much.

Yeah, he's a teenager. There was a strip last year where he got a part-time job, as well as a strip where Michael kissed his girlfriend in front of his dad like he was trying to prove he's grown up in a weird way.

It's really gets to me how Lynn draws herself completely miserable in all the strips of her taking care of the baby and the only time she looks really happy is when she's going out and leaving her baby.
