It's also a p lovely timing to have that discussion right when Tove is happy about it, even if Zelda was the right person to make those points (as a straight gal, she ain't). She strikes me as the kind of person who read a bunch of queer theory when Tove came out and then decided now she's the expert on lesbianism and queer representation, what do you mean it's not her place?

How Wonderful! posted:Yeah, it's funny to me because there are numerous DtWOF strips where Mo is making the exact same argument, and I think it lands better because for one thing Mo as a lesbian has stakes in this issue, and for another there are usually a few other characters on hand to functionally say "shut the gently caress up Mo," which allows Bechdel to make the useful point without committing to didacticism. As a straight woman, I side with Zelda because there's this weird zeitgeist that pushes women towards performative lesbianism, regardless of their actual orientation, and it feels exploitative to me. I'm grossed out by the fact that the only consistent queer representation in media is (attractive) queer women, because straight guys get off on it. Where are the gay and bi men in media? There aren't any, because it's not sexy to ad/tv execs. It's not an issue of representation as much as exploitation masquerading as queer representation

I mean I knew that already but it's like..your job is to...be the agent for everyone's deals you presume they're going to get? That's presumptuous and asinine. Why did you bring along the mermaid and the trapeze guy again? DNA-wizard was in charge of writing the job requirements for the ship's crew, and deliberately wrote them to best fit her friend group because she didn't want to be apart from them for the years the trip would take. The mermaid is in charge of maintaining the algae farm that is used to make all their food. I don't remember what the trapeze guy's job is. ...I just remembered that 'the guy who wears a smartphone costume everywhere' is their main computer and has been on this entire trip, and I don't think we've seen him in months and months.

From what I've heard Bushmiller basically modeled Fritzi after his wife, and the character of Phil Fumble was a self-deprecating joke about how he was a dumpy awkward potato person married to a pretty lady. The fact that he lets his self-insert be the butt of the joke is one of many reasons Bushmiller is better than Gilchrist.

I don't get the deer joke with the antlers unless it's that she's transgender? As for Zelda, yes, you dummy, most lesbian ads feature super femme women, you'll about as common see a more butch lesbian as you will two burly gay guys kissing in an ad that isn't in a gay magazine. Yes, it's annoying. That said, shut the gently caress up.
