What's on your mind, Axa?
Conan the- Oh, oh, this might be a little rough Jun. 11th- Jun. 17th, 1979

So, starting to read this, I was thinking I'd get to talk about Bêlit and the story Queen of the Black Coast, which despite often being considered one of the best Conan stories I can barely remember and should definitely re-read, and how Bêlit was combined with Valeria from the excellent Red Nails, the last of the Howard Conan stories, for the 1982 movie... but then I saw that this was going to be... a bit rough. Seeing as it's late '70s Marvel rather than early '30s pulp, and looking ahead at next week, I imagine it's going to basically have its heart in the right place but still be... not super great as far as its depictions of black people go.

Unfortunately, reading old pulp you'll often have some racism. Considering how wildly racist the past was, it's tragically unavoidable and as I mentioned before, RE Howard was no exception. Rusty Burke in his introduction to The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard discusses this, and discusses the fact that in many ways Howard seems often quite sympathetic towards African-Americans depicted in several of his horror works and with the down-trodden and oppressed in general. That said however, surprisingly sympathetic and progressive for the '20s and '30s looks really loving rough nowadays. I love pulp, Howard and Lovecraft are two of my favourite authors, but there is absolutely no denying that there is a lot of problematic poo poo in there. Anyways, I've tentatively timg'd this batch, and I might again if there's something that strikes me as rather egregious though, as I said, it's late '70s Marvel so I expect it to be more "I see what you're going for, but that didn't age well in the slightest" rather than "basically any depiction of a minority from the early comics."

There is no story. It's just a thing that happened. Bernice tried to use it as an excuse to run her life for her, but that didn't go anywhere either. Now she's drawn slightly differently than she used to be.

I vaguely remember that the reason ultimately given for the weight gain was that Tiffany was depressed because she was feeling increasingly isolated from her father and far away from home. I don't remember if we were actually told this at the time, but that's been the implication ever since then at least with all of Tiffany's personal problems directly relating to a strained family relationship.

She was sad and lonely at college because daddy's new girlfriend was stealing him away from her and she wasn't the popular one any more now they were out of highschool. It's a classic combination of transition to adulthood problems that she tried to solve with cake.

It could have been the basis for a good characterising arc but instead the psychology demon started armchair psychoanalysis and the idiot decided the best thing to do would be to constantly point out that she was fatter than she used to be.

Some Guy TT
Aug 30, 2011

It still had potential to be good once the fat-shaming got out of the way but then we found out that Ann Eiffel was the girlfriend and welp, so much for any nuance about the relationship between Tiff and her dad now that she was all grown up.
