amigolupus posted:I'm not so sure about this. Something that Zelda does a lot is to have a character act like a complete strawman just to make the other character's points look better in comparison. I have definitely had a few moments at parties in my lifetime where someone I met engages in toxic behavior, especially around women, and normally chill friends around me would laugh it off as “oh he’s so *quirky*!”, so it’s a lot more common than you think.

Vargo posted:Much as I hate to admit it, it might legit be that James was on the way out already, though. We've already remarked on how the art has been too drastically different, and the last two storylines have been very miniature, moved along at something resembling a pace, and lacking in James' signature attempts at "adventure." If he had kept his head down I don't think they would have fired him anytime soon. Just pure inertia would have kept him working, and the fact that the Sunday nature strips are probably still beloved.

I just hope whoever replaces James Allen, if they replace James Allen and they don't just retire Mark Trail, still draws random close ups of woodland animals over panels.

CommonShore posted:I think the joke is supposed to be a play on "pissed" as in "drunk." It's not good at all, and that's why I'm annoyed that I remember it. I don't think it's a pun, the lady frog is using the word "pithed" the way a person would use "brain damaged." One of Larson's things is swapping out human words/concepts for the animal equivalent, like the comic about a salmon school board's debate over teaching spawning CommonShore posted:"pissed" or "piss drunk" is also a (North) American expression. The thing about Mark Trail is that I'm 28, and I'd be completely down for a comic about nature adventures and hiking because that's actually super cool... but somehow James Allen has managed to make it the most banal poo poo garbage for so long. I can't find him now but I'm subbed to a youtuber who goes into the desert and talks about random plants and rocks while cursing a lot and he's really entertaining. Or there's another youtuber who goes around his state clearing clogged drains on the roads and cussing out the local authorities who neglect their infrastructure, and these are great and could make for interesting comics with the right person at the helm.

Mämmilä![]() Song is Eppu Normaali - Pidetään Ikävää. Eppu Normaali is one of the biggest bands in Finland, starting out as a punk band but moved towards pop-rock during the 80s. Pelle pelastaa refers to Pelle Miljoona, a musician and a writer who was a pioneer of Finnish punk and new wave. Ratsia was also an early Finnish punk band. EDIT: I just realized that for some reason I called the girl in glasses Päivi in a previous strip, when her name is actually Tiina. LazyQ fucked around with this message at 14:07 on Jul 1, 2020 |

Wasn't James Allen a relatively recent hire, and it's not like the strip was thrilling before. It used to be competently put together, sure, but not exciting.
