Ok, I'm not even in the same universe as hollywood productions or anything but I'm pretty sure the only person who has the power to unilaterally kill a production is a studio head or similar, not the writer/creative consult person/book-this-is-based-on author. Like holy poo poo I want to read this contract because goddamn is it a fuckup of epic proportions.

Shows how much I pay attention to the details because I know I've been around since the first run at the lisa movie was made but gently caress me if I can recall any details

And it's not like he's loving JK Rowling or something. He's a first-time script writer whose book was so successful he's still teaching at his local public high school. (You can't tell me he does it for the love of teaching. I've never seen any evidence that he doesn't loathe every moment.)

Yeah, this was really remarkable! In the real world a "kill fee" is what a writer gets paid when their work isn't used, through no fault of their own (usually in the context of a freelancer being commissioned to write an article that is then canceled by the editor or publication or whoever). In Batiuk-Hollywood, however, it was a clause in Les's contract that meant that he could kill the production at any time he liked--for, if not "any reason", then at least a list of reasons that included "having to make any changes at all during the process of turning a book into a screenplay is damaging my pure, precious writerly psyche"--and somehow collect money for it.

To be fair, in an insane world where this sort of clause exists, Mason is at least making the correct decision by forbidding Les from having anything to do with the scriptwriting process.

Oh, I don't know about that. If you look back at when Cory Winkerbean was in his class, good ol' Les seemed to take a certain delight in humiliating him.

I'm pretty sure he hears a term (like "kill fee") and just decides he knows what it means so there's no reason to look at up, and also the meaning he made up is incredibly dumb and obviously wrong.

Let's see... this actor has a... "pay or play contract?" Ah yes, now my memory is belatedly stimulated to retrieve some details of this sort of legal agreement. As I recollect, that type of compact can be characterized as "zany to the max". :chord:

Not only was the week with Dinkle pointless, so was the past couple weeks where Les criticized every actress that tried to play St. Lisa. Remember that the only reason Mason did the chemistry read was to trick Les into thinking that Marianne was the correct choice to play the role, and Les still isn't convinced of anything.

Exactly, Saul's had this explained to him, so maybe he could have had some loving empathy here.

Though considering the past year of Mary Worth, there's a high chance they'll ignore all of that and say Madi's just a growing kid or have bad friends on the internet influencing her.

The answer should be, "We don't want to die cold and alone in space."

If they'd had the fuel to arbitrarily decide on new solar system destinations, they probably wouldn't have had to sit in Mars orbit for weeks waiting for a Hohmann transfer window when they had to launch early.

The only thing I don't understand is how Holbrook could ever think his world is grounded enough in reality that he needed to bother putting a note that he's intentionally cutting out transmission delays.
