Dykes to Watch Out For #84 (1990) -Alison Bechdel ![]() ![]() This is one of my all-time favorite DtWOF strips and it's a shame it got cut because I think we rarely see Mo this vulnerable and so up-front about needing to be liked and understood, even though it's subtextually there all the time. I think the second to last panel is really moving-- Mo's happy and relieved to hear that her therapist likes her, but also kind of embarrassed at herself for caring that much, and feeling kind of awkward and off-foot from having the quiet therapy part said out loud. I also really like the bottom row of the first page and how it's bracketed by Mo's "dunno" on the one hand and then the therapist's little nudge on the other, after the cut. The faces and body language are great and it's a little moment I've had in therapy so many times, where I just need to take a minute to follow a thread. In general this particular strip feels really honest about therapy, and that weird transference relationship you have with your therapist. I really wish this subplot had been preserved more in the Essential. I think the canniness and light touch about analysis in it is really useful presage for the turn Bechdel takes in Fun Home and Are You My Mother?.

I really love seeing all these old Far Sides. I didn't expect to enjoy them as much as I have been, since I was so familiar with them for so long, but either there are enough "new" ones in here to me or I just don't remember all of them anymore. This setup cannot possibly be OSHA compliant. Also, Junior looks like an old man pretending to be a child. ![]() F Minus has a subtle message. ![]() Mark Trail ![]() Mary Worth ![]() That's not comforting; it's creepy. FrumpleOrz posted:Kevin & Kell And here we go. Corrie the sheep is actually half-wolf, and she's related to the main cast -- she's the daughter of Ralph the wolf, Kell's brother. You see, when Ralph was really young, the first time he went out hunting he fell in love with his prey, a sheep, and they had Corrie and gave her up for adoption; the mother later died. (This is why Ralph at the beginning of the strip was extremely hostile to Kevin and Kell's marriage, he didn't want his sister to suffer like he did.) Corrie was adopted by scientist moles and cloned, but managed to escape, and history repeated itself because Bruno the wolf stalked her but instead of killing her he started talking with her and they fell in love. She initially hid as Bruno's sheepskin that she always kept on his back, because Bruno didn't want his friend Rudy (who was also very opposed to predator-prey relationships because of his family's situation) to find out Bruno and Corrie were dating. Corrie later revealed herself, and after some initial hiccups everything was mostly fine. Because of her genetic make-up, Corrie is omnivorous. She mostly eats vegetables, but she can and has eaten meat on occasion, including predators that had been threatening her or her friends. Bruno the ram was initially a wolf. When Corrie had a run-in with a predator and ended up in the hospital he was so worried that he had an upset stomach, and started eating grass to calm it down, and found out he really liked eating vegetables. He had his teeth removed and replaced with herbivore teeth, and three extra stomaches installed, and as a result he can no longer eat meat. This caused a rift between him and Rudy, which was later solved, and he was attacked many times by bigot predators who wanted to punish him for being "unnatural", and he was saved by his friend each time. Later on he had an operation to transplant horns and "wool follicles", and is now basically a sheep in every respect and identifies as such. Though his past as a wolf sometimes caused problems, like when he and Corrie were almost refused adoption because it showed up in the paperwork. Notably, besides the two main characters (Kevin and Kell), I think Bruno and Corrie may be the longest-lasting relationship in the whole strip? They showed up at the very beginning, and they've been together since, with no interruption. Carla the chameleon is Corrie and Bruno's adopted daughter. She was initially a foster, but they decided to adopt her after bonding with her.

Thanks for posting the Everett Trues again. I bought a printed collection last year. It's not comprehensive and I think it lacks most of these. I don't think there's naything in it that hasn't already been posted, but I could look through and see if there's some good ones. Some Guy TT posted:

It's like James Allen heard he was fired so his final act is to end his run where everyone stands up and claps for Mark, TV Tropes-style. Mikl posted:Bruno the ram was initially a wolf. Will you also be covering the whole Domestication plotline in early Kevin & Kell? I think Rudy was supposed to be domesticated, but I forgot whether that was supposed to be a metaphor for being gay or not. It makes Rudy trying to assault Bruno for being trans even worse, though.
