Sally Forth's Saddest Summer Flashback Ever

Ces twisting the knife on Medium Large posted:

Back in 2006 I introduced the characters of Sally’s mom Laura and Sally’s younger sister Jackie. I also mentioned that Sally’s dad had passed away suddenly when she was just 12.

In the years since Sally has oft-mentioned her dad, usually in hagiographic terms and in comparison to whatever disagreements she was having with her mom at the time. Then two years ago we learned that when her dad died, Sally went through a very difficult (read: highly angry/punchy) adjustment period in sixth grade that some readers referred to as the “Sal Wrecks poo poo Up” phase.

But today [the 16th] is the very first day we actually see her dad in the strip. He is 38 in this memory. Sally is 11.

For some reason I hadn't thought of it before, but Hollywood doesn't do photorealistic depictions of characters based on real people unless they're a historical figure or celebrity.

So there's no real reason to make the actors look exactly like Les Moore and St Lisa because a) nobody knows them, and b) it's irrelevant to the story.

But for some reason Batuik has depicted the selection of the Lisa actor as on par with casting Jesus Christ.

THIS IS NOT NORMAL AND SO VERY WRONG!!

I still find it baffling that Evans thinks Delta is impossible to write for. A leukemia survivor. Extremely politically minded (and a lefty). One of the only black characters in the strip. Yeah, I can't think of any storylines that could possibly involve somebody like that.

Now, granted, when she was written out Obama was in office and we all thought everything would be sunshine and rainbows forever, but she didn't die, she just went off to college. There's nothing stopping Greg from having her come visit once in a while. But I guess there's nothing to be written about a young black activist in America today.

Anyway, here's today. I am also glad that "go along to get along" did not turn out to be the "correct" solution to Tiff's problem. I'm happy to have been wrong about that one.

The finger-wagging scolding that makes every fourth or fifth Zelda strip insufferable is visible here.

"You, Zelda and by extension the reader, are personally responsible for this adorable bear dying because YOU took a plane trip. I, the artist, am on the trail of the real problem where my character notes the incessant waste and pollution of capitalist activity, but by showing the precious bear's life melting away panel by panel as Zelda accepts her friends' argument that a given individual's CO2 contributions are insignificant, I scold YOU."

I will say, though, that I am pleasantly surprised that the writers aren't actually going down the road of Tiffany having to just accept being miserable for the sake of her father's happiness, nor going with him not believing her and disowning her over Ann.

Is it surprising? This is the quickest route to return to status quo, and Luann will always want to keep things as familiar as possible. Like how college is just middle school but sometimes you live on your own

Count me in among people who are SHOCKED that Luann's narrative didn't delve further into opportunities to poo poo on Tiffany.

In the context of Luann as a whole it's bittersweet but hell, I'll take any victory for the last two likeable characters in the strip

OK, I've been confused about this storyline a bit. Did Ann fake a pregnancy before she was engaged? All I remember seeing is Tiffany found a sonogram on the back of a picture frame and jumped to conclusions. Now, then when confronted with this, Ann did go along, which is weird, I'm just confused by that.

Also, while I'm glad Tiff isn't getting the short end here, her father just turning around on his fiancé/longtime live-in girlfriend on a dime like this is not great either, imo.
Lovely.

Looks like one of those actors in their 20's with a small frame and baby face that Hollywood likes to have to play teen roles. Boy-ish but visibly not a boy. And that an artist of James Allen's caliber can convey something so subtle makes me think - tracing.
