Crashing out of a story like that into reruns will damage what's left of the brand, and I don't think wobbly art or trolling internet commenters is enough. I'm thinking they got a cease-and-desist letter from somebody whose art he lightboxed. Also James Allen was ruining the Mark Trail brand for years. There was even an editorial from a newspaperman/longtime Trail fan (believe it or not) saying the James Allen stories are so bad he won't try to save that strip from cancelation in his paper anymore.

My parents had to deal with that a few years back when the neighbor's tree fell over and broke a fence and some plants, and that was with both parties cooperating and just trying to figure out the insurance forms and reimbursement. "When you hire guys to clean up the part on your side, can they take care of the part on our side too or do we need to hire them separately and you pay us back" sort of thing. Then there are issues with a healthy tree such as branches/fruit overhanging a property line, blocked views in places where people pay way too much money without thinking about how things will grow in ten years, general cleanup from fall leaves, plenty of fodder for folks who already don't get along to explode into a legal brawl.

Johnny Walker posted:Your posts are making me want to check out the books. Got a recommendation for a good starter? Del Rey put out a series of Robert E Howard collections with Conan in three volumes ("The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian", "The Bloody Crown of Conan", and "The Conquering Sword of Conan"). They arranged the stories by order written, as written without later editorial changes, to show the evolution of the writing and character as Howard became more comfortable writing them, have some excellent essays and introductions to give more background, and a variety of extra stuff, from copies of the general maps Howard made to synopses and unfinished drafts of stories he never finished. I personally started from the beginning, reading them in order, then moving onto, in order, Del Rey's Kull, Bran Mak Morn, and Solomon Kane collections. That said, it might be worth it to pick up the second volume first, it has Hour of the Dragon which was originally written to be a novel published in Britain (suggested by a publisher after turning down a collection of short stories), and is generally considered one of the best, so it might be a good place to start. If you're in the UK, I guess they were released there as "Conan of Cimmeria": volumes 1 through 3. There are several other collections out there, Gollancz had a two volume collection under their Fantasy Masterworks line ("The Conan Chronicles" volumes 1 and 2), and later collected those into an omnibus titled "The Complete Chronicles of Conan". Not sure how those are, but the Fantasy Masterworks line was/is pretty good and I've got several of their collections, so I figure it'd be hard to go wrong with that. Maybe skip The Vale of Lost Women no matter which way you go, it is bad. The worst of the Howard Conan tales. Conan the Barbarian Mar. 3rd- Mar. 9th, 1980 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

As an ancient child of the sixties, I can tell you that: Matinees were the poo poo. Usually two or more movies with cartoons in between, for a quarter to fifty cents (depending on the theater & films). We had a theater close enough to walk to (the Hiway in Jenkintown, outside of Phila). Usually the oldest sibling led the others, had all of the money, and was the cop/crowd control. No parents. We'd hit Walker's candy store on the way up and buy a metric assload of loose candy for a quarter. Since almost every kid did this... then yes, it could devolve into a popcorn & jujubee-flavored riot as all that sugar hit. The main purpose was to keep the kids occupied & out of their parent's hair for a few hours on the weekend. *** I remember winning the bet to take my son to see the Barney movie (or some such horror) around 1997. When my wife got home, she had the thousand-yard stare and swore to never do it again.

sweeperbravo posted:That latest Luann is such a great example of the need to immediatley deflate any tension. Like literally within the last panel teh conflict is introduced and IMMEDIATELY resolved. Oh, I don't know, have her look for a job? (Team Evans can't possibly think she'd still be getting paid to RA if she doesn't even live in the dorm anymore, right? Right?) Couch surf? Meet up with Piro again and he teaches her the way of the technically homeless? They could have done something. Anything. But instead they went with nothing. Absolutely nothing. And yes. It's infuriating. We had to spend months and months (years?) watching Tiff be financially and emotionally abused and beaten down by a monster, but that was cool and funny because Tiff is a "bad" character. Bernice, however, is a "good" character, so she cannot sit in her discomfort for more than five minutes without being rescued. the only conflict or tension we will get with this plotline will be wacky roommate drama as Luann and Bernice learn to live together. See below: ![]() Oh, hey, by the way! Don't you guys think that this comic was getting a bit too in-your-face with the diversity, what with having two whole POC taking turns showing up to say a line or two every few months? Well, one of them was Dez, Bernice's roommate! And now Bernice doesn't live in the dorms anymore! Bye bye Dez! Phew, back down to one! What a relief!
