Vintage Valiant (Aug. 11, 1940) When the Roman Emperor Diocletian split the Empire in two, he also moved the capital of the West from Rome to Milan, as Milan was better situated for an era when emperors had to keep moving around and were often busy personally fighting on the frontiers. Under Emperor Honorius, the capital was moved again to Ravenna, as the city was surrounded by marshes and had a port, and was therefore seen as being difficult to siege. By the time our story takes place, the Western Emperor really only directly controls Italy, and even that control was tenuous. In 410 Alaric the Goth was able to sack Rome itself, and in 476 Romulus Augustulus, the "white-faced boy-emperor" mentioned here, was deposed by Odoacer. This event is often cited as the de facto end of the Western Empire. The city of Ravenna remained an important city, and was the capital of "barbarian" kings as well as the Eastern Roman administration following the campaign of Belisarius. The city finally was captured from the Eastern Empire by the Lombards in the 8th century. On an unrelated note, I don't buy for a second that Val's favorite part of the city would be the libraries.

Medenmath posted:Vintage Valiant (Aug. 11, 1940) Val being into into the libraries is totally plausible because history writing as a literary genre (as opposed to chronicles) was primarily for educating an audience of aristocratic youth, and the idea was that it would help them learn how to speak well and lead well, particularly in military contexts. In other words, for Val the library would be full of fresh schemes and gimmicks for killing large groups of people in creative and unexpected fashions.

The Phantom Empires is a pretty neat movie and for some reason it bugs me that he spells Murania wrong. That being said that is not a bad likeness of the cave entrance: I guess I'm proud of him for that. Anyway here's episode one of The Phantom Empire so you can enjoy it yourself and then knock all the Funky Winkerbean characters as loving Gene Autry poseurs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itw5593MGyM If you speak Spanish you might also like to really pull rank on these Winkerbean creeps and read Alejandro Perez Cervantes' 2006 short story collection Murania or show off your c. 2008 hep cat credentials by watching The Sam Plenty Cavalcade of Action Show Plus Singing which is a pretty good pastiche. You could also completely reduce Les and his miserable friends to abject humiliation by brushing up on the real-life conspiracy theory that sprung out of The Phantom Empire's melange of hollow-earth tropes and it's long-term influence on science fiction and pop culture by reading Fred Nadis' magnificent dual-biography The Man From Mars which covers both Ray Palmer and Richard Sharp Shaver with sensitivity and precision. Darthemed posted:Retail I ended up looking up the reason for Black Friday sales recently, and here's what I learned: You know how Macy's Department Store has sponsored the Thanksgiving Day parade for decades and decades? Well, they'd naturally use the event to promote their stores, and since you're a month-off from Christmas, they'd naturally advertise their big pre-Christmas sales. Several other department stores did something similar with their own more-local events. Since the giants of the industry would wait until just after Thanksgiving to start their sales, all the little guys did the same thing. This became the precedent that eventually mutated into Black Friday. (The irony that Retail frequently complains about Christmas sales starting just after Halloween is pretty great for this reason)

And since I forgot it this morning: Edge of Wreckage As always, Jam saves his real care and love for drawing airplanes. And yes, Amelia Earhart disappeared while piloting a Lockheed Electra 10E. Which was introduced in 1935, a couple years before this strip takes place. Despite the balloon placement in the first panel, the 10E could not actually talk. "But wait," you ask, "if Lucinde crashed here as a child, how could she have been flying in a plane that can't be more than two-three years old?" "Shut up," James Allen explains.
